I just lost with an A2345 straight flush to some bozo who cold called three bets pre-flop with 6c7s. It's not like he even had 67s.

I get AcAs in middle position. The pot is raised before me, I re-raise and the villain of this story calls. The flop is 5c7d3c giving me the best possible overpair and a backdoor to the nut flush. It's bet, I raise, he calls. The turn is 2c. It's checked to me and I bet. The villain calls and the other player folds. The river, OF COURSE, is the 4c giving me the ignorant end of a straight flush. Bet, raise, re-raise, cap, I lose.

Why did you get into a raising war when it only took one card to beat you? It still sucks, but you should have lost a lot less.

What you just said sounds to me like, "Why did you get in a raising war when there was a card in the deck that could beat you." Well, there's almost always a card out there that can beat you but most of the time people don't get their one out. How am I supposed to put him on a ridiculous hand like like 67o when he cold-called three bets pre-flop? Even at the river, how am I supposed to put him on the 6c? Think about it, a player who cold-calls three bets before the flop with 67o and keeps calling when it's obvious his 7's are no good is also the kind of player who would raise and re-raise when he caught any kind of flush or straight on the river.

You're right that I could have lost less but there was a lot better chance of me winning that pot than losing it. I don't think I could have reasonably put him on that 6. Yes, I knew there was a chance he could have it (just under 20%?) but I think in the long run I will lose a lot more by fearing the one-card beat than I will by getting as much money in as I can. Especially with a straight flush.

If he makes it 3 bets on the river when you hold the ace of trump but there's a one card straight flush on board, it's time to think that he might just have it, whether or not his preflop and flop play was good. A cap by you is really uncalled for. What do you think he's holding that he'll 3 bet with?

Well, several of the things I mentioned. He had been at the table with me for quite some time and my view of him was that he would have probably raised on a straight and definitely on any flush. I believe his own hand is the only one he sees when he plays. If he had any club, I was sure all he would see is that he had a flush. I am pretty certain that he would have played it the same way if he had the King and probably also with the Queen. Had he been less buffoonish, I would have been more worried.

Also, he capped the pot. I bet and he raised me. I thought he was representing a high flush but since I had the Ace, I re-raised him and it wasn't until he capped it that I gave serious thought to the idea that he might have the 6c. At that point, it was only one more bet to find out. I clearly couldn't* lay down a straight flush for one bet against someone who had been playing the way he had.

I was obviously dead wrong in my assessment that hand but I don't think it was an unreasonable read given his previous play.

* Well, I could but I don't think there are many players who would recommend laying down a straight flush against a weak player for one more bet.
