| ok I know that if the game you are in is soft and you are playing against weak loose opponents you should play for as long as you are able to. What if you are in a game that is neither great or necessarily bad and you win a ton of money in the first hour or so. It seems that whenever I start off quick and get up about 2 or 3 hundred in a 4-8 holdem game I rarely make much more than this if I decide to stick around. Typically it is a grind just to make a hundred dollars. I figure that in situations like this when I win a few monster pots it is time to go. When you have a big winning session how much can you really expect to make at a 4-8 holdem game. I have booked 4 and 5 hundred win sessions but these are few and far between. This is why I believe if you get luckier than normal you should pack it in once the rush is over. more often than not I seem to give some of these winning back when I attempt to stay. | ||

| What's make you think that aritficially stopping the time period used to measue your gains and losses you would not return to a normal win rate at another time? | ||

| If it is in your nature to let the emotions of big win or even big wins turning in to a loss affect your playing than there is nothing wrong with walking away and posting a nice win even if the table is "soft". Playing emotional poker might not allow you to take advantage of a soft table. | ||

| YEA!!! someone posted my favorite topic. if we were robots that lived forever that had no emotions to clutter up decision making then the suggested route of playing whenever you have an edge until you no longer have an edge would be valid, fortunately we arent. statistically your winning a few hundred at 4-8 in a short time frame is insignificant but lets go over the positives and negatives of getting up *and feel free to add more to either side* negatives you arent putting in the 'time' you are favored to win even more positives you won you can go do something else you didnt lose the mental ramifications of winning *and winning a nice piece of change* are incalculable, how that makes you feel is totally dependant on each individual. one of the issues that i think most people who say dont leave are talking about is the availability of the favorable oppurtunity, the harder it is to find a game in which you have a large edge, the less likely it is you want to walk away when it shows up, but at low limits im not so sure at this point its a problem *assuming the goal is to move up overtime maybe practicing staying would be good* one basic tip that pretty much solves the problem for everyone. when you throw away that Nth consecutive nonstarting hand and find yourself wishing you were elsewhere, its time to leave and if you stop and think about it, its really just that simple. | If this is the way you want to play it, go ahead and get up winners. Remember that in the long run it is one long game and next time you sit the game might be much worse. timmer | ||

| Here here!! I find much more profitablility in playing a "quick game" and going up $100 at a low limit table than grinding it out on my a$$ for 4 hours. A win is a win...no matter how small: Dr Seuss. Jazzman88 | ||

| Feeney talks about this in "Inside the Poker Mind". He basically says that you're fooling yourself if you play to get ahead X amount and quit. He maintains that your skill level, over the long run, is going to determine how much money you make per hour, and when you arbitrarily stop/start your sessions isn't going to change that. You have to look at your poker career as one long session. I agree, but I think you have to temper that with some other factors. First, how is your rapid gain going to affect your play if you continue? I know I'm not the only that has to fight a tendency to get loose in these situations....the 'rush syndrome'. Or you may go the other way and get very tight to protect your windfall. Either way you have to consider the psychological effect of the situation on your game. Next I think you have to consider what you have learned in the session so far with regard to the texture of the game. For example, maybe it's an unusually wild game with a few maniacs feeding off each other. Is this the type of game you feel comfortable at, and are you willing to endure the big stack swings that come with it? Or do you feel more comfortable with the thought that you hit it at the right time, take the money, and find a 'more sane' game? Another consideration might be, can you use your win to psychologically influence the others at the table to your advantage? If it's a somewhat timid table and you just got a string of hands you might be able to bully the table a bit to steal some pots. Or, if it's a wilder game, maybe you put some wilder players on tilt by busting a few of their hands and you can find a way to capitalize on it. Anyhow..Just thinking out loud.
