| Well, the kids went to stay with their mom after Thanksgiving festivities, and I went to the poker room. I played 30 hours between Thursday night and Sunday afternoon, including a NLHE tourney on Saturday morning. I was grinding a LOT, trying to work out some bugs in my game, and getting frustrated at my lousy play. Yes, I caught some bad beats, but my frustration was really at seeing what I was doing wrong and feeling helpless to change it. I played some 3-6, and some 6-12 on Thursday night and all day Friday, and was finally feeling better about my game when I left Friday night. So I got a good night's sleep for the tourney on Saturday, and showed up ready to play. I was really in the zone for the tourney, and took a fantastic chip position for the first two hours. I was confident, and playing well. When the blinds started to get fairly high (500/1000) the cards dried up, and my stack was deteriorating. The money was getting within shouting distance, and I was playing ultra-tight, as was everyone else, trying to break the bubble. Then I made a deadly error: I tried to make a play for the blinds with my last 6000 chips with KQo from UTG. I got called by AKo with a much bigger stack, and he caught an A on the flop just to make sure... not a chance I should have taken, as I had enough chips for at least one more go-around, likely two or three. As it turns out, I was only four from the money at that point. Realizing how stupid that was, my game suffered the rest of the day. It was work just to stay even. I played until about 9:30, and finally gave up because my back hurt, my knees hurt and I was exhausted. I went home and decided there would be no poker on Sunday, even though I would be free until about 4 pm. When I woke Sunday morning, I had had an excellent night's sleep and felt really good, so I decided to grind a little more, and not focus so much on the flaws I was trying to work out, just play for a few hours and have fun. Maybe I would get lucky and win a few bucks in the football pool. So I showed up and told the board I would take any limit HE that came available first. I ended up at a 6-12 game. About an hour later, I was having fun, and feeling good about my game. I was up about $150. Then I caught a hand that qualified me for the bad beat jackpot, and ended up leaving with almost $7k in my pokcet! What a weekend. :^) gotta love the game. -Moz "Hey! You made me ink!" | ||

| Congrats on a great finish to your holiday weekend! I'm only in my 2nd or 3rd month of playing poker but I am getting better every game I play, taking something (knowledge-wise) out of every hand. I've been reading this forum almost as long as I have played poker. Newbie question: What's the bad beat jackpot? Pat O. | ||

| Some casinos run special jackpots that pay out if you have a BIG hand that gets beaten. In the HE games at my casino, you have to have Aces full of Tens or bigger beat by four of a kind or bigger to win the jackpot. If you do, you get 1/2, the player who beat you gets 1/4 and the table splits the last 1/4. In my case, I had four 4s beat by four As. I had pocket 4s, flopped A44, the turn and river were both Aces and my opponent was playing AT. -Moz "Hey! You made me ink!" | ||

| Hi MozMan- I thought you had to use both cards in your hand to qualify for the jackpot - like the player who was holding A-10 for instance. All cardrooms have different rules; lucky you! Cyndy | ||

| Yes, in my casino you do. In his case, his T played, because it was bigger than the 4s. His best 5-card hand was AAAAT, and mine was 4444A. -Moz "Hey! You made me ink!" | ||

| How is he using his ten? If he has quad Aces, he has quad Aces, no? I guess I'm missing something here, but I thought in order for your hand to qualify, you must use both cards in your hand, whereas in this situation he was only using the one Ace as he didn't need to use his kicker ten to play because he was the only player who could have possibly held 4 A's. I must be tired! Cyndy | ||

| :^) It plays because you must play your best 5-card hand. So, if it looks like this: Him: AT Me: 44 Board: A44AA Then his best 5-card hand is: AAAAT (the T is playing, it beats the board) and mine is 4444A... and the hand qualifies for the jackpot. But if it looked like this: Him: A3 Me: 44 Board: A44AA Then his best 5-card hand is: AAAA4 and he can only play one card from his hand, because his 3 doesn't beat the board. The hand would not qualify. Hope that helps. -Moz "Hey! You made me ink!" | ||
