Did I play this okay?, Palinya, 1. Dec 2003 16:36 | ||

| I am in the small blind and get AQo. Everyone folds except for the button who raises. I call. BB folds Flop is A 9 2 rainbow and I bet it and I'm raised. Turn is a 7 and I check - raise him. He calls River is a 5, I bet and he calls He had a AK and won. I thought he might have AK or AA but I thought it was much more likely that it was a blind steal attempt and/or a bluff / semi-bluff. When he called my check-raise I put him on an ace but I didn't think he would have the K as a kicker. Was I too aggressive on this with only AQ? I figured I had lots of room to play this with everyone else folding and the raise coming from the button | ||

| Hey Palinya. In this spot against a typical player, I probably would have made it 3 bets to get the BB out of the hand. However, if the BB is telegraphing a fold, then smooth calling might be the right play. On the flop after you did just smooth call, I think a checkraise is in order. It's almost automatic that button will bet when checked to, and you're giving him the chance to get out cheaply if he has a really poor hand and was trying to steal on rags. Most raisers won't lay it down so easily, but why give him the option? Given your play before the flop and on the flop though, I like your play through the rest of the hand. You have a very big hand heads up against a stealer, and at this point in the hand, it's fairly likely that the button also has an ace. Charging him the maximum is great because there's a very good chance that his is less than yours. Unfortunately, he happened to have the one bigger ace, but that's the way it goes. You definately had lots of room to play around with this holding and that flop. Most of the time, you will be the one dragging the pot in a similar situation. Lee | ||

| I think you played well. I might have check-raised the flop and bet out on the turn, but either is OK. Bottom line: you had an excellent hand but the button had a slightly-more-excellent hand. That happens. If everytime you hold AQ, you're too worried about the other guy holding AK, you'll end up playing passively. Just a bad break. | ||

| I think you played it to timidly from the beginning, you should have re-raised pre-flop (granted I dont know how much he so your call might have been correct) but I you could have also raised on the flop to find out where your at (taking phil hellmuths advice HAHA). Your right it was perculiar that he just called your check raise with top pair top kicker. | ||

| Two differences in how I would have played it: 1. I would have three bet preflop to make sure that the BB folds. Most of the time, you will have the best hand here (or a coin flip hand)unless you know the button to be ultra-tight. 2. After he raised my flop bet, I would have check called the rest of the way. Reason being, there aren't any draws on that flop (rainbow and no str8's), so he wasn't raising to get a free card. Secondly, if he does have an Ace and a weak kicker, you encourage hi to bluff the whole way AND if you are beaten, you lose less. | ||

| WELL, PALINYA, YOU DIDN'T MENTION IF THIS WAS INTERNET, OR "REAL" PLAY. IN 'REAL" CASINO PLAY, THE PLAYERS ARE USUALLY BETTER, AND WAY WAY WAY MORE CONSERVATIVE. IN INTERNET PLAY, THE PLAYERS ARE SO WILD, THE RAISER MAY VERY WELL HAVE BOTTEM PAIR!! COUPLE MONTHS AGO, I WAS PLAYING 15-30 HOLD EM ON THE INTERNET, AND HAD AN AJ, IN THE BIG BLIND (SEE EVERYONE, IF I CAN TYPE OUT "BIG BLIND" YOU CAN TOO!!)) THE FLOP WAS A 4 5. I BET, AND GOT TWO CALLERS. THE TURN WAS AN 8, I BET AND GOT RAISED. BY ACCIDENT, I HIT THE "RAISE" BUTTON, INSTEAD OF THE CALL BUTTON. THE RAISER CALLED. THE RIVER WAS A QUEEN, I BET, GOT CALLED, AND WON THE POT. THE OTHER DAY, ALSO IN FIFTEEN THIRTY, I HAD A PLAYER CHECK RAISE ME, ON THE TURN, WITH K3 WITH A BOARD OF K 8 9 7. I HAD CAPPED THE FLOP (TRYING TO BUY A FREE RIVER CARD) WITH A JACK TEN, WHICH I HAD RAISED WITH, ON THE BUTTON. SO, ON THE TURN, I HAVE THE MORTAL NUTS, AND THIS GUY (GAL?) IS CHECK RAISING ME, WITH KING THREE !!!?? NORMALLY, IF I CAP THE FLOP, I WOULD HAVE AT LEAST AKs WITH A BACKDOOR FLUSH DRAW, AT THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. SO, YOU'RE PRETTY HIGH UP THERE, ON THE SPECTRUM OF HANDS. YOU DID OK, JUST RAN INTO A BETTER HAND. REMEMBER, WE DON'T FEAR WHAT COULD EXIST, WE WEIGH WHAT COULD BEAT US, WITH THE CHANCES OF SOMEONE ACTUALLY HOLDING THAT. NOW, THIS IS WHERE YOUR PLAYER NOTES COME IN HANDY. IF YOU KNOW THAT THE RAISER IS VERY TIGHT, YOU MAY VERY WELL ELECT NOT TO EVEN CALL HIS RAISE BEFORE THE FLOP WITH AQ. IN FACT, IF YOU NEVER CALLED A RAISE WITH AQ OFFSUIT, IT WOULD NOT BE A HORRIBLE THING TO DO. WITH ACE QUEEN, YOU GENERALLY WANT TO BE THE ONE RAISING, MOST OF IT'S STRENGTH (WHICH AI'NT MUCH TO BEGIN WITH) IS WHEN YOU ARE THE RAISER. ONCE SOMEONE ELSE HAS ALREADY RAISED, THE IMPLICATION IS, THAT THEY MAY VERY WELL, HAVE A HAND THAT COMPLETELY "DECIMATES" YOU ( ADAM THE EXPERT CANNOT USE OTHER PEOPLE'S WORDS, SO I'VE CHANGED "DONIMATE" TO "DECIMATE" HOPE Y'ALL LIKE MY NEW TERM. ON THE OTHER HAND, IF YOU ARE UP AGAINST A C.A.R. (CRAZED ACTION RAISER) YOU MAY WISH TO THREE-BET WITH AQ, IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU CAN CLEAR THE MINE FIELD OF ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS. HOPE THIS SHOWS EVERYONE: EVEN THOUGH I HATE HOLD EM WITH A PASSION, I'M STILL ONE OF THE TOP FIVE EXPERTS IN THE WORLD, IN THIS HORRIBLE "GAME" A.T.E. | ||
