Shaking When Playing Live Q's?, CodyHartman, 1. Dec 2003 12:49

Well I played my first limit live game the other day and had some great sucess. I won $150 in about an hour and halfs play at a 3/6 Kill game. I am quite happy with my monetary gain from this table because I was playing smart and not getting caught up in some of the bad play in others.
I did get lucky to catch pocket Aces twice and here is my question. Each time I got a great starting hnd and bet out I would be shaking a bit. I guess I was xcited to get my money in the pot or something. But I still got called and still won. But after the first winning hand that I had someone said I knew you had a big hand becuase you were shaking I later got a guy to fold because I was shaking again. He said the same thing to me.
So when does this go away? Will it? How do you control this? Should I stop playing live becuase of this problem?
I should add that I have only played live twice now and play mostly online, where I have been playing for about 9 months with sucess.

Thanks for the help,
Cody

Cody,

This will go away(most likely) as you begin to grow more comfortable playing live. I play 95% of my games online, and when I go to the casino I still find my heart beating fast etc etc the first few times I enter a pot. After a few times through the blinds I settle down and play my game regularly. I imagine this will continue for me until I am hitting casinos at least once a week.

If you never settle down then this might be a problem, especially if you stop shaking when steeling yourself for a bluff, since anyone watching you will pick up on it immediately.

Good luck,
ReMMy

I'm not sure that it ever totally goes away. After watching "Showdown at the Sands" it is nice to see that even the pros experience the same tendencies. I thought the heart monitors were great. Towards the end, they even showed TJ Cloutier shaking, but I'm not totally convinced it was because of his hand.

As for people telling you that they picked up on your "tell". That is one of the stupidest things they can do. Keep this in mind and next time the flop doesn't hit your KQs give bluffing a shot, but make sure you shake!

Hey Cody-

I went through that for quite some time after I started playing at the B&M... but it does go away. Occasionally, I will still shake; and usually I can stop the tendency with some food... I've noticed that it happens a lot when I get hungry.

Hi,. THe shaking is a result of the rush of adrenalin you get when see a huge hand (exciting!). It will go away if you play enough, but if you play live only once or twice a year, it will not. In that case, get a prescriptionn for Indocin or similar drug, which will control the rushes for a few hours.

It happened to me when I was starting out in casino play.

A number of bad beats cured it!

Do you let yourself get excited over online cards as well, or just sit there and play? Do you have a home game you can play in more to get the feel of playing with paper cards and chips with people paying attention to what you are doing?

Our home game is more for fun with the housemates than real stakes, but it is good training to not watch the flop but the people, wait to look at my hole cards at my turn, memorize the hole cards, and work on eliminating tells. One poor guy that plays with us is like thumper when he has a hand, it is so bad that my seat shakes, and it is practice for me to not inform him of this. So whether we play for low stakes or pride. I feel like I'm getting something out of this experience besides fun with the boys when I flop a boat and get to play it cool as a cucumber.

Well it is good to know that others have this problem.
I guess I should have specified and said my hands shake while betting, not my whole body as some might have interpreted it.
When I play online of course I get excited with a big hand but it easier to control the emotions for my for some reason. Also the whole betting thing is easier online and playing live makes it hard to count your chips out becuase of the shaking. But hey I know I need more live experience before I get to serious about playing higher stakes and will do so before I make my x-mas trip to Vegas.

Another Q...does having a beer or two help to settle those nerves??? I have heard that only a couple of pros even think about playing and drinking at the same time. What is your guys' take on this???

Thanks again.

Cody

I dont know if I can say NEVER DRINK and PLAY enough, I have only seen one person who can pull it off, and that is mr. michelob himself.

I find one brewsky helps take off the edge while maintianing a good mindset.
I get the shaky hand thing sometimes at casino poker as I'm an online player, so its fun to use it to my advantage sometimes once people pick up on it to make a steal by forcing my hands to shake when I'm holding crap UTB. A tell's not a tell if you do it every time.

Just jump in and be the first to bet on the turn during a hand there was no raising in. Make sure your 'bet' is actually a double bet where your putting in the amount you would put in if you were raising. Do your little hand shaking bit while you do this. Then when the dealer points out that you acted out of turn act embarrassed and apologize to the table and watch everyone fold.
