Just my simple take on things!

After playing both Stud and Hold-em online, from a novice's point of view, I find Hold-em has less variations/distractions then does Stud. In Hold-em you have the Flop, Turn and River, all up. I feel it is much easier to determine what a any player is capable of developing, based on the "community" cards, then have to check what each player has in front with Stud.

Another point, and this is a difference between BJ and Poker in general. With BJ, beatable games, [1 deck, favorable rules] are very hard to come by, especially in the big casinos. With Poker, it is you against other players, not the house; so the bigger the casino, the more tourists, the better the odds.

I have only been to Vegas once before, and I just played BJ, mostly Downtown. Very hard to find a decent game.

Anyway my question is:
Where can a novice find a decent low limit Hold-em game in Vegas and best time to play?

Many thanks!

Do pay a visit to Excalibur. There are a lot of novice players there, and they almost always have a $2-4 game going. In fact, if the room happens to not have many novice players, it's probably full of fish.

Another place to go would be Luxor. Not as friendly to the novice player there, but most players are indeed below average. I think during the day you can find 2/4, but not so easy at night. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here. Also, Luxor often has tournaments in the mornings, usually for around a $25 buy in.

Neither one of these casinos has a 'great' poker room, but they are novice friendly. Keep in mind that no matter where you play, there is the occasional shark to watch out for, but it is very unlikely at the low limits. Avoid Bellagio and Mirage, those are known to be where some of the best players play.

Actually, it's a $2-$6 spread limit game. They also have a $1-$3 spread limit game and $1-$5 stud.

If you want to play low limit where there are plenty of novices, go to the Excalibur. The poker room is brightly lit and (some of) the dealers are really friendly and fun to have at the table. The atmosphere is relaxed and the games are soft. Park around back and you'll be right by the poker room. Plan on having to wait a little while if you arrive early- or mid-evening.

For a beginner, i highly recommend the Palms, especially between 11 PM and 4 AM. I'm relatively new to poker. I made about $200 in 10 hours or so over two nights at the 2/4 hold em tables. And it was only my 2nd and 3rd times at live tables.

The poker room itself isn't the best, but the dealers are friendly and most of the players were too.

Hey all,

Me and the wife are headed to Vegas from Dec. 11-14.

She is learning poker because she sees how much fun I am having. (I am slowly breaking her of the idea that "playing" requires having cards in front of you.) She wants to play in Vegas when we go. I have her practicing the format of the game on play chips at UB and with my account at the penny tables to get a feel for how things happen.

Obviously, she needs the lowest limit game available. But she also needs a room that won't be filled with drunk jerks yelling at her when she messes up while she is learning.

Any suggestions?

And, other than Lee Jones, what books should I get her to read?

Thanks,
Dave

Also, anyone else gonna be in town? Even you Roy, I'll buy you a drink! ;-)

Again, the Excalibur is about as low-limit and friendly as you're going to get.

Hokie:

I'm going to be in Vegas that same weekend. Fortunately, the wife and kids are staying home, so my schedule is wide open. I'm staying at Bally's but planning to play at either the Palms or Orleans. If I spend less than 40 hours at the poker table, I will be disappointed. Plus, my beloved Cal Bears are playing your Hokies a couple weeks later in the Insight Bowl. Some pre-game smack talk sounds like fun too along with some poker. By the way, weren't you guys ranked something like #6 at one point? What the hell happened? :-)

Drop me a line at gfrussell@yahoo.com if you want to try and get together.

there are a few places to can play 2-4 HE in Las Vegas . Most if not all have rakes that are
tough to beat with this limit. I will try to give you pro's and cons of each

Palms- pretty soft 2-4 game as 2-4 goes , good comps, fair dealers, Poker room manager
is A#1 guy. quite smoky and a bit grungie. Bathrooms behind poker room usually quite
clean.

Binions- 2-4 game 1-2 blinds, soft players, good comps, extremely helpful and friendly
floor staff. **No extra Jackpot rake** a bit on the smoky side , drunks, a chance to find
rocky or rude locals, really grungie. Hint * use upstairs bathrooms out side 2nd floor gift
shop.

Palace station - 2-4 game I cant say anything much about it because I never play there.

Luxor 2-4 Game as with any mandalay bay property i.e. circus circus excaliber . that has a
2-4 the additional Jack pot rake is going to hurt you HOWEVER these have high hand
jackpots so they are not quite so bad because you have a somewhat reasonable chance to
collect on one.

The excaliber has some fun aversions in connection to their poker room. is a fun room but
a bit grungie and the dealers are fair to so so .
they have spin the wheel promotions and jackpots be well aware that you, the player, pay
for these added attractions. they also spread food for their players around dinner time this
has the effect of drawing some unsavories from time to time but for the most part it is ok.
* Hint Be forwarned their are good bottom feeding players in the 2-6 spread limit H.E. game here. I know 1 2+2 published AUTHOR that plays that game regularly.

Let the floor person know your situation and ask to talk to the poker room manager. ask
him you questions and perhaps for a playing tip or two. this will ingratiate him towards
you ( make him like you) then later you can ask him for a "buffet comp" or a ticket to the
cafe'.

Poker attracts all types so dont be put off by; the know it all, grumpy local, or blind drunk
. you will run across them often in you poker career. And dont be afraid to make a few
mistakes we all make them even good players with thousands of hours make procedural
mistakes from time to time. and beginners make them all the time .
So in regard to this and all that I have written above I suggest you play at Binions in the
morning and either palms or excaliber at night

There's a real 2-4 trend in Vegas lately. Some Card rooms in Vegas that have soft $2-4 games of late (not mentioned in Timmer's great post)...... ........... Monte Carlo, Flamingo, Orleans, Sahara and even a $1-2 at the Plaza (it gets real smoky in the Plaza though). The best game for a novice is the 1-3 at the Excalibur IMHO (not to be confused with their 2-6). There is no jackpot or money wheel money deducted from the 1-3 game and no bottom feeders. I've never seen anyone but me come in only for the buffet :-) Where ever you play, have some fun & Good Luck!

A buddy of mine's wife works the floor at the Plaza. He told me they get the $1-2 game up there often. Many 1-2's on some nights. I would call first though. I forgot to mention the Cannery in my other post. All they ever seem to deal there is $2-4. Good Luck!

I played a bunch at the Monte Carlo 2-4 tables a few weeks ago. I thought the room was great. Very nice dealers and they had a few tables with auto shufflers which was very nice. I always hate waiting for the cards to be shuffled. They also had only one big blind and no small blind. Good Luck
