Value raising in O8 preflop, Schuster, 29. Nov 2003 21:36 | ||

| I'm playing a 7.50/15 O8 game with a mix of talent. Most were pretty bad. They played far too many hands, and gave little respect to raises, and generally drew to and payed off with much less than the nuts. The exception was the UTG player, who I could tell was a better omaha player than me, and an EP woman who was probably about on par with me. She had a little more experience, but made some very shady calls on stuff like bottom set. UTG opens for a raise. He tended to get a lot of value raises with good multiway hands because he knew he could count on a good multiway pot. The EP woman cold calls the two bets and I 3 bet with AA27 single suited. 2 players and the BB call the raise and the UTG player makes it 4 bets. The cap is 4 raises at this particular table, so I have the option to make it one more. No one is going to fold at this point. My thoughts were that the UTG player probably has an A-2-wheel-x with a suited ace type hand, which means my odds of hitting a set for high just dropped a good bit. On the other hand, I do have the best hand going in. I chose to just call and see the flop, figuring that I didn't want the pot so big as to justify chasing beyond reason. The flop was a K-Q-7, with a 2 flush (not one of my aces) and a backdoor nut flush draw for me. The UTG player bet out, and the EP woman called, and I took a card off because I was pretty confident no one would raise behind me. The turn was a nice 6 that also gave me a 4 flush. It was checked around to LP who bet, the UTG player raised and I called the 2 cold. The LP player called. The river gave me a low but finished the other flush. It was one bet on the river and I called, and got a quarter of the pot. So, did I play it well or like a sucker? Lee | ||

| As for you wanting to put in the extra raise, I too would have done what you did, the variations in O8B are so great they diminish (sp) the value of AA. Dont get me wrong though AA is still extremely powerful in O8b especially if your going heads up... but with the amount of players in the pot, and the 4 bet by your so called UTG who strongly represented the A2xx with the ace suited, you are probably not going to hit your set (if even there is another ace in the deck, considering someone else VERY likely has it), the best thing your really hoping for is your ace flush, or a board pair giving you the best two pair (but like I said with 4 people in the pot a board pair is going to do you little to no good) So putting the extra raise in there your only really valuing your hand at a flush, and putting the extra raise in just b/c you have A 2 is also a bad decision b/c in O8b it is very easy to read a person who has A 2 on most occasions. Now onto the flop.. you have AA27 and flop is K Q (rag, cant remember) so you only really have back door draws and a pair of aces, calling one bet in this situation is the right move, I would be VERY hesitant to calling a two bet, but when a low with your suit fell, giving you 4 to the nut low and 4 to the nut flush (not to mention a pair of aces) you have a very strong hand in this position, so calling two bets is not a bad move. So when the river came and it filled your nut low, its not a bad card for you, yet obviously not a great one either since your "UTG" opponent gave a rather obvious A 2 read, so you really have to be thinking that your about to get quartered, so cold calling the last bet was also the right move (obviously). I find AAxx very easy to play heads up but it gets SO much more complicated when there are numerous people in the pot after a capped pot. Good luck at the Tables Highflyin3484k (the future in poker) | ||
