Can anyone answer this question for me?, rambler, 29. Nov 2003 21:31 | ||

| I played in a home game of hold em 2/4 twice this week. The first time I showed up and played what I thought was a tight game. I ended up breaking even and when I had decent cards I never got a lot of action. The second time I had been drinking heavily and really shouldn't have been playing. The alcohol made me extremely aggressive even borderline maniacish. I was often reraising and sticking with draw hands to the river. Well low and behold I absolutely cleaned the game out. I won more than any poker session i've played in for a while. I couldn't believe it. Everyone was conplaining as they couldn't understand it either. How could getting drunk first make me a better player? Is it that i'm that bad to begin with and just got a run of good cards? Or was it cause I was aggressive betting heavier than usual. Or could it have been because the other players had me pegged as playing a certain way and I came in and threw them off balance? One thing for sure was that when I was drunk everyone was really eager to give me action but that could backfire as well. Has anyone had a similar experience? What's the lesson I should learn from this and how can i repeat the success sober? Vary my play more? work on table image? be more aggressive? | ||

| I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say the game was shorthanded? Very aggressive play against players who aren't used to it and don't know how to adapt will run over a shorthanded game. I've been in shorthanded games that were so good that I could raise practically every hand and show a profit. Of course I didn't because I didn't want them to catch on, but enough to load up my pockets. Lee | ||

| The game started with eight and then there were nine for a while and it dwindled down to seven. So your right it was a little short handed but it wasn't a five player game either. | ||

| The table sounds really timid to me in general and not very adept at dealing with an aggressive player. I'm betting you can win even more sober with more pot-buys in LP. For me, I don't feel comfortable with the table-image you apparently got while drunk--namely of being so aggressive and loose that people were always wanting to call you down. But I do like for people to think of me as sufficiently loose and willing to take risks that they'll call aggressive bets at least sometimes on my good hands. It's kind of a fine line, though, and often depends on the external factors of cards and opponents. I'd suggest that the next time you play with them sober, try pushing quite a bit harder (selectively, but particularly in LP sometimes even on complete trash), then pulling back a little tighter as soon as you get the feeling they're starting to think your bets might be bluffs. I think the trick at a table like that will be finding that delicate balance of just how far to go in the loose-aggressive direction. | ||

| I think you got lucky. You might want to take the opportunity to step up you original level of aggressiveness some as this seems to be working for you. Home or private games are a microcosum unto themselves. Adapt and change or the better players will get a chance to take you off big time. As we all know it is much tougher to hit a moving target. | ||
