B&M question, Schuster, 29. Nov 2003 21:07

What's a typical rake schedule for a B&M game? I don't have many opportunites for games like this, but I recently found a 7.50/15 with a $5 rake once the pot hits $60 -- too high or about right? I sat in the 3/6 for a while, they raked $3 out once it got to $30. I didn't actually win a pot, so it didn't affect me, but is that too high?

The rake was typical for the $3/$6 game - 10% up to a max of $3. In California low limit it's usually $3 in a $3/$6 and $4 in any raked game beyond that , although at a certain point you nearly always go to time. I was at the Bike a week ago playing $40/$80 and they were dropping $4 which was pretty interesting - I haven't seen that for a long time (but then I haven't played at the Bike since they were charging time). The $7.50/$15 game is a strange spread - but nevertheless, unless there is some special perk - $5 is too much imo.

Yeah, I thought 7.50/15 was kinda weird too. It works out nicely though, buy a rack of 2.50 chips and it plays with the 2 chip 3 chip blind structure.

The food is fantastic and free... is that enough? I'm not used to this, too much online stuff!

Is this a private game or a real casino? The reason I ask is because in a private game you have the advantage often of playing against the house man - who may be worth significantly more than the difference between a normal rake and an inflated rake - in this case $1 per hand. Most will probably disagree with me but it's all about the game for me. I don't consider an extra $1 a hand to be an insurmountable sum; there are many ways you can get that back - depends on how much you eat and drink - if it's a home game you may not be tipping a waitress (you might too - depends), if the players are poor - $1 in a small price to pay. Another thing that I've never heard talked about - if your edge is there and it's just the extra buck - how are the players tipping? The biggest problem I have with an appropriate edge is money coming off the table - if the rake is $2.50 and the players are tipping $5 hand - I would rather play the same game with the only difference being that the rake is $5 and the tip is $1 a hand. I'd rather have $6 a hand come off the table than $7.50.

It's a private game. I'd tip the "waitresses" (they're just the owners daughters) for food but drinks and such are self serve in a cooler about ten feet away. The game is pretty soft, and most people throw the dealer a 2.50 chip on the bigger pots. It's dealers choice hold'em, omaha high, or omaha 8/b, although I've never seen omaha high called. Some of the players are absolutely wretched at O8, including one guy who keeps forgetting he needs to use 2 from his hand, and another woman who continuously calls a low when no low is on the board. I'll probably keep going as long as it stays good. Thanks Angel.

ok let me sure im getting this right
private game
$5 rake per hand
i would assume you should get 20 or more hands dealt in a hour, thats $100 to the house every hour.
what kind of food/beverages are provided? *this is a cost and could take a big chunk out of the *profit* if a nice spread*
couldnt the house player just play tighter than tight and walk away a big winner everytime?
now on the flip side, from what you are saying about how they play i wouldnt sweat it, you should be bringing home some nice change more often than not.

The beverages is just pop, iced tea, coffee, that sorta thing, but the food is from upstairs, a nice italian restaurant. Probably $12-$15 dollars a plate I'd guess. It's good food!

ahhh didnt notice or forgot you mentioned its a raising rake *goes up depending on the pot*
if you plan on eating there each time and say you drink a few sodas and the game lasts at least 3 hours i would jump all over it and be smiling the whole time
if they are as bad as you make out you should easily beat the rake

one bizarre suggestion depending on how friendly the game is, pick a less than premium hand you ALWAYS play and when it wins say something about it and *why* you play it

example might be always play 10 2 in holdem just cause of Brunson
example might be 6789 in O8 just cause they are all connected and you like connected cards
example might be A 10 5 rainbow in stud just cause next card has to make a 2 straight and most times a 2 flush
basically total junk hands easy as heck to run away from but once in blue moon can hit and could really throw them a curve *hell he folds 80% of the time but how good can he be since he always plays 10 2?*
