Hi,

Well hopefully we can help you!

But there are no quick ways to beat the game. You are brand new to poker so I would suggest you get yourself some good reading material, practice, practice, practice, and join in on some of the discussion that takes place here on the forum. I suggest the books by Lou Krieger, "Poker For Dummies" - and please don't take that the wrong way, it's just the title, and Lou's books can be of much help to you and you do need to start from the beginning and learn the basic stuff first, so.

Welcome aboard to the UPF - Feel free to join in on any of the poker discussion that takes place, and if you just want to read the posts and ask/give your responses later, then feel free to do so.

There are lots of beginners here along with professionals, and we're all one big group who has a common bond - we give advice, we get advice, we listen, we learn....we improve our game because of it all.

4P-

Read as much as possible, Theory of Poker as well as Winning Low Limit Hold-em. Look for and study the many hand analysis threads included in the strategy section of this forum.

Lucky you to be starting poker in this day and age. If I may reiterate 4 POKER's excellent advice "READ". Although there is no substitute for real experience, reading will shorten "the way" so to speak.

With the internet you have access to tens of thousands of articles and posts on poker. Make use of it. Not to deter you from asking questions, but from my experience, it is much more rewarding to surf the net and absorb like a sponge. The end result will be the ability to ask a focused question, backed by the knowledge you have gained.

Try and find things out for yourself and don't give up. Since you're here, start with the search function when you are looking for particular information. Although the UPF is still relatively new, it is starting to amass a respectable archives.

I believe Google has archived the entirety of the Rec.Gambling Poker (a discussion group) Although there is a massive amount of garbage to sift through, you will find many gems within. http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=rec.gambling.poker

(WSOP Omaha bracelet winner) Steve Badger's website has excellent articles that covers a broad spectrum of topics. http://www.playwinningpoker.com/

Cardplayer Magazine has a large archive of their articles that can be viewed online (for free). http://www.cardplayer.com/

Pokerpages "the poker portal" has a massive amount of articles/links, everything under the sun on poker. http://www.pokerpages.com/

There are other poker forums on the internet of varying value. Remember that you will get out of poker, what you put into it. If you want to become a serious poker player, then treat it that way.

Poker is a massive puzzle, and one without borders. Each time you learn something you will place one more piece. Many times you will see where a piece goes, yet still need to find the connector piece. Be paitent. focused and determined. It will lead to success. PA

UH, GEE SMNLFAN, I WONDER IF I CAN CONSENSE 17 YEARS

OF POKER EXPERIENCE, INTO ONE POST>

HA HA TEE HEE.

WELL, YOU HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO, WHERE SHOULD

I START FIRST?

I'LL JUST GIVE YOU SOME BASICS

1. DON'T PLAY AGAINST SUPERIOR PLAYERS. MONEY IN

POKER, IS NOT MADE BY GREAT PLAYERS, PLAYING

AGAINST GOOD PLAYERS. BUT BY GOOD PLAYERS,

PLAYING AGAINST BAD PLAYERS.

2. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE RULES OF THE GAME, BEFORE

YOU SIT DOWN

3. WHEN LOOKING AT YOUR CARDS, MAKE SURE NO ONE

CAN SEE THEM

4. DON'T LEAVE YOUR CARDS "UNPROTECTED" A DEALER

MAY TAKE THEM, OR A PLAYER MAY THROW THEIRS INTO

YOURS, AND YOU HAVE A DEAD HAND

5. DON'T PLAY WHEN TIRED, SICK, OR WHEN YOU HAVE

EXCEEDED YOUR "FRUSTRATION LEVEL"

6. IF YOUR HAND IS PUTTING CHIPS INTO THE POT, MORE

OFTEN THAN IT IS FLICKING CARDS INTO THE DISCARD

PILE (MUCK) YOU ARE PLAYING TOO MANY HANDS.

7. WHENEVER POSSIBLE, TRY TO BE THE AGRESSOR,

BE THE ONE BETTING, NOT THE ONE CALLING.

8. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PERSONALITY

TRAITS, AND CORRECT ABILITIES, SUCH AS: MATH

ABILITY, LOGIC AND PROBILITIES. KNOWLEDGE OF

STRATEGY

9. DON'T PLAY "SCARED MONEY" IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD

TO LOSE, YOU WILL BE TO SCARED, TO PLAY EFFECTIVELY

10. LEARN VARIOUS METHODS THAT PEOPLE CAN USE TO

CHEAT, AND WATCH OUT FOR THEM.

11. STUDY GOOD BOOKS ON THE SUBJECT.

12, MEMORIZE THE ODDS, FOR VARIOUS EVENTS HAPPENING,

THAT PERTAIN TO POKER, AND LEARN HOW TO FIGURE

OUT THE ODDS, FOR ANY GIVEN SITUATION

13. IF POSSIBLE, MOVE TO AN AREA OF THE COUNTRY, THAT

HAS THE MOST AVAILABLE GAMES

14. LEARN TO SEEK OUT THE "GOOD GAMES" THIS IS

CRITICAL. YOU CAN'T WIN, WITH A BUNCH OF

"ROCKS" (VERY TIGHT PLAYERS)

15. DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.

THIS IS VERY BASIC ADVICE, BUT STILL IMPORTANT

NOW, WHEN THE LIST GETS TO ABOUT 23455 THINGS, YOU

WILL HAVE FINISHED YOUR EDUCATION

A.T.E.

Ditto. Mike Caro University Of Poker can be found, by simply clicking on "POKER INFO" at the bottom of the UPF page. It is an invaluable resource, often overlooked by the majority of visitors to this forum. PA

Winning Low Limit Hold-Em....by Lee Jones.
Personally I think this is the best first book. A lot of the others will talk mostly about concept or plays that just don't translate well to Low Limit games for a beginner.....my two cents.
