Practice Against People or Software?, CRCarson, 29. Nov 2003 19:05 | ||

| In the chess world, we debate whether it is better for beginning players to play against other people or against computers...there are pros and cons to both. Software allows you to play against pre-configured "players" of different skill levels, or ratings, ranging from total patzer to Grandmaster. As a newbie to HE (a little new lingo there), I'm wondering: is it better to spend my man hours learning amongst the madness of the online play money tables or to try my skill against a computer program that will, presumably, know to fold a 72o? | ||

| I think Wilson turbo is best as you can define the type of game as well as fast forward after you fold allowing more hands | ||

| Just because they are real people in a real money game, it doesn't mean they know to fold a 72o | ||

| Well, that's my point. Software would fold correctly. Watching people succeed with lousy starting hands is a corrupting influence. | ||

| There ARE pros and cons. You have to get the time in against real people- nothing will substitute for that. However, using products such as Turbo Texas Holdem, which simulate betting and folding as well as card competition, you can review and experiment with different actions without cost or pressure. Plus, Wilson's products allow you to replay the exact same hand (or series of hands, if you set it up first) in different ways, so you can more fully examine poker situations. If you've ever said to yourself "I wonder what she would have done if I check-raised on the turn?" you can examine those possibilites in a limited manner. | ||
