Holding JJ during a straddle, zman, 29. Nov 2003 18:59

I was in a 3/6 limit game and I was sitting directly left of someone who opted to straddle. I didn't have very good position but I decided to raise hoping that most of the players would not call $9 cold. The person directly left of me capped it and all folded except him, another guy in LP, and myself. Flop is something like 3 4 7 rainbow. At this point I check -- because of a possible QQ, KK, or AA to my left -- and so do the other players. Turn is an 8. I bet out thinking I might have the best hand and both players call. The river is a 5. A 6 would make a str8 but I don't think anyone has one due to the amount it costed to play the hand. I check, expecting a bluff at the pot. The LP player bets, I raise (hoping to win the pot right there or expecting that he bluffed) Both players call my raise and we flip our cards. The other preflop raiser had QQ and the guy who called $12 cold had 47c and made a two-pair. I obviously didn't have much of a chance from the start.
Should I have just pitched the hand from the beginning? If not, should i have played anything differently throughout the hand? Also, what in the hell was that guy doing in the hand w/47c? It's not right to call a single raise cold let alone 3 (ok, 2 plus the straddle....) Anyway, let me know what you think

THis is what happens at low limit tables. People play crap when they shouldn't. over time you will take this person's money.

You posed the question "what in the hell was that guy doing in the hand w/47c." I think the real question here is why in the hell did you think your pair of Jacks would hold up after all the betting and raising, and not improving your hand all the way to the River? With all do respect, I don't think you looked for the outs. Yes, the guy holding 47c did play with crap. But, especially at low limit tables, some people will play with anything suited, and any connectors. This includes 56, or 56 suited. But I think what the real concern in this situation was that someone capped your max raise, and another person called it. You have to assume that someone has QQ, KK, AA, AKs, AQs, KQs, or AK. Not to mention, any other pocket pair that can make trips over your JJ. Now assuming nobody has a pair down, any A, K, or Q on the flop (or turn or river ) and you're beaten. I like the preflop raise, and maybe even the call on the cap. But just because everyone checked the flop doesn't mean nobody has a hand. In the end, you should have let this hand go.

Personally, I likely would have raised preflop and called the cap, just as you did. But with two players in for the cap, I would have looked to check/fold if my hand never improved. Then again, hindsight is always 20/20.

I agree, the 47c did get lucky. BUT, he did make his hand on the flop. I've seen much worse holdings make a hand on the River.
