Roy, Mark, Grant - Question regarding quitting a Loser, csi, 28. Nov 2003 15:01

Hi guys, I'm curious as to how much you guys have been down when you've decided to quit a session. There must be times when no matter how long you play you are forced to take a loss.
I'm not trying to be nosey, I'm just trying to get a feel for myself when I should quit. And I already know that if the game is good and you haven't changed from your A game then you shouldn't quit, etc.

Have you guys ever quit a session being down 50 or more big bets?

Thanks for your time

Hi. I am not any of the important guys you requested answer your question, but since this is an open forum, I will answer anyway. (Note: if you really want to hear only from Roy, Mike and Grant, you can send them e-mail. I believe they are very gracious in answering much of it).

I lose about one-third of the time, and I have done this more or less for over ten years. This is about normal for a pro playing limited (4-6 hour) sessions. I cannot tell you how often Roy loses, but I was there once when he lost, so I know it happened at least once..

In general, I play 4-6 hours unless a) I am playing badly, b) the game is very tough [never happened yet] or c) I am ill. I have occasionally stayed longer because the game was phenomenal, but that happened only once or twice.

I select those hours because many years of record keeping have convinced me that is the optimum time I can concentrate on poker without losing some of my ability. In the last three years, my biggest session loss was 61 big bets. I have lost 50 or more big bets 3 times, and came close to that a few times as well.

When it is time to go, I go. The game is still there when I get back.

I once played 7 stud hi 48 hours straight and afterward I felt like someone bashed me in the head with a red hot branding iron. My eyes were red and swollen and I had a hell of a headache. Took me three days to recover . I'm still not the same.

I like BarryT's advice and always have respected it. However I like my sessions to be a bit shorter especially on line where I limit them to no more than 300 hands.

In a live card room I play between 2 and 5 hours . Unless I'm winning with (or losing) every thing in sight. Really, it depends on the game. If the game gets tighter than a Quakers coin purse I try to find another game. If it is loose I just buy a huge stack of chips. Sometimes as many as 150 big bets.

I've played some ridiculously large stacks before in small limit ring games. Once in bilioxi ( traveling there from Las Vegas on a A.R.G. outing) I bought in for 3 racks in a 1-5 no ante stud game and played the same stack (I left it on the table even when going up stairs to sleep) for nearly 4 days. After winning 4 or so more racks of white it was beginning to get where I couldn't keep a str8 face any longer. It was a hoot. Playing around 700+ chips in a cramped stud game ant easy. But it is fun especially when you see the looks on the locals faces when you rake the last chips of their puny $40 buy into that huge mass. Its kind of a funny feeling when you are playing more chips the rest of the table has combined.

I was playing 8 to 10 hours a day there but took many breaks.

You will see some ridiculously large chip stacks at any A.R.G. Event especially the granddaddy the BARGE event that is held in Las Vegas the first weekend of AUG. Some players play for days on end at these things.

Sorry for rambling

Yes Timmer, I am into those marathon sessions, 24 hrs sometimes on weekends. When I crash, I talk in my sleep. My girlfriend says it sounds something like this:

*hmmp, mmm, jack jack, JACK JACK!, damn maniac, mmm, hmmph, 4,7,2,9, 30% !!.....hmmph, check, grrmph, raise....RAISE!! hmmph...

or something like that

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this post - I went to the Bellagio to play poker on Friday night, and it took until tonight to get even!!!!

Honestly, I don't really put any kind of a cap on my losses. I try to stay objective about things, and if I feel that either my play is slipping, or the game I am in is turning bad (unprofitable), then it is time for me to go.

I play mostly in the $75-150 range, sometimes a bit lower or a bit higher, and have had many losses in the range of $5000. Also many wins of that size or larger. For me, I am very careful when I get stuck a significant figure. I want to make sure it's just a bad run of cards, so if I feel like I'm part of the problem, I will leave without hesitation.

I am willing to take a good sized loss if I feel the game I'm in has a lot of value. Again, being objective is very important. Many times I've listened to poker players saying stuff like "I've lost 12 plays in a row, but I'm playing GREAT!" or "yesterday I lost $8000 playing $30-60, but I felt good about my play." To this I say - IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!
