Suspect play with AQo, comments?, mkpoker, 28. Nov 2003 09:25

This was a 5/10 hand I played recently online. I think my post flop play (on all streets) was suspect...but I still think was probably correct. Curious what others would you have done (especially on the flop and river).

The table is quite aggressive and there's a particularly loose aggressive player on my left (he's not a maniac, but he'll almost always raise when he plays). From MP, I'm dealt AQo. Folded to me, I raise. Loose raiser re-raises. I'm happy with the reraise, because I figure it might isolate us. However, button and BB cold-call the 3-bets and I call.

The flop comes 8hKdTc, giving me an overcard ace and gutshot. BB checks, I check (should have bet?), loose raiser checks, button bets, BB folds. I'm getting nearly 10:1 on this call, but I fear a raise behind me. Nontheless, I call and loose raiser calls.

Turn comes Ac, giving me top pair and putting a backdoor club draw on the board. I bet out. Loose raiser raises (I put him on a lower ace). Button cold calls and I call.

River is Qh, giving me two pair, but giving a str8 to any J. I'm first to act and think about betting, but check given the str8 possibilities. Loose raiser bets, button calls. I think seriously about raising, but call only.

Loose raiser holds A3, top pair only.
Button has ATs, lower two pair

Questions:

1. Should I have bet the flop originally, and would you have called the bet (even in retrospect, I think my check/call was right).

2. On the river, should I have bet out originally with two-pair despite the 4-straight.. And should I have raised once the loose player bet? (I'm still unsure about this one)

Thanks as always.

For what it's worth I like your play. I wouldn't have bet the flop because it opens up the possibilty of a raise which I dont think you want. I didn't sound like you had much of a chance of winning it right there.

I dont think I would have bet the river as well.

I think I would have played it exactly the same way. Especially on the river. The loose raiser could very well have AJ or something similar, and you'd hate to lose 3 bets.

I don't think your play is suspect. It's good to be cautious in this spot, but yet the pot is too large to give up.

1. Bet the flop here only if you think you will win outright a reasonable % of the time. Otherwise, don't bother.

2. There are times where I would bet the river here when just heads up, and other times where I would not--mostly if I was fairly confident that the single opponent had two lower pair. But with another player in the mix, it's just too likely that a straight is out there.

And, besides, sometimes we want to induce our opponents into betting. Caro did an excellent audio lesson on this a couple months back. Sometimes checking and calling on these situations is actually the best play. Don't let a bunch of aggressoids tell you you're a weakie for check-calling when it is the sometimes absolutely the best play. :)

yeah I would also say that you were right to check the flop--it's tough to get all those guys off their hands when they paid so much to see the flop and a K and 10 fell. Rest of the hand sounds fine to me.
