Almost made it, need advice, Ian J, 27. Nov 2003 11:05 | ||

| Last night I played a $10 multi-table tourney on UB with 260 entries. I was grinding and then began to play very well and catch a few hands. I made it down to the final 2 tables. 30 get paid, so I'm already in the money, but like always the real money doesn't come until the top 4 or 5 so that's what I'm going for. A few hands in with blinds of 600/1200 and my stack at about 5000, I get 44 in the small blind. My stack is obviously a little below average. The chip leader, T32000 is in the big blind on my left. Right here, I'm looking to steal when it's folded around to me. I move all-in with 44, thinking that if I steal great, if he calls I can take a coin flip because of my short stack. Anyway, he calls w/ K9s and spikes a King on the turn and I'm out. Should I just fold the 44 and wait for another hand, even though I've only got about 4x BB and the blinds are going up in 5 minutes? Any advice would be great. | ||

| Hmmmm... I think that was a very good play actually. You pretty much have to raise in that situation, and with any raise you're essentially going to be pot-committed. If you just raised to 2 BB, you'd still have to bet into him on the flop (I don't think it would be wise to allow any free cards there pretty much regardless of flop). So, I think the all-in was really the best play. With his holdings you're probably a slight underdog (I'll say this without double-checking--his pairing chances are just a little less than 50% but the flushes probably put your opponent just a hair over 50%), but in most cases you really should steal the blind--which you really need at that stage. | ||
