Enjoy!

PP_TECH Welcome Mike and Roy! Thank you for joining us!
PP_TECH Are you both ready to start fielding questions?
PP_TECH Hi folks, Ladyslip can take us out once we start
LadySlip me first?
festiva yes
LadySlip I'm new to poker, been playing online at the
LadySlip lower limits and now I want to try in Vegas
LadySlip I am comfortable with a $200 bankroll, where
LadySlip should I go?
RoyCooke Two hundred will give you a shot, but is not a
RoyCooke good bankroll to sustain a lot of losses...I
RoyCooke would go to a strip casino like the Mirage that
RoyCooke has an influx of tourists...The tourist money is
RoyCooke MUCH liver than the local money END
PP_TECH Mike? anything to add?
MIKE_CARO I agree with what Roy said, but I might add
MIKE_CARO that...
MIKE_CARO an even better place for online players to try
MIKE_CARO real-world poker might be the Los Angeles area.
MIKE_CARO There are many more loose games there. END
LadySlip thank you
PP_TECH Thanks guys, Ladyslip I hope that helps.
PP_TECH Festiva take your best shot.
LadySlip I'll let you know how I make out! :-)
festiva From poker without cards you mentioned that it
festiva makes no difference what price is paid for
festiva something only what it is worth at the moment
festiva does this mean that all technical investment
festiva either of the poker sort or the wall street sort
festiva are all nonsensical?
PP_TECH Mike? you are up.
MIKE_CARO Yes, festiva, what I mean is that
MIKE_CARO whatever you have "invested" doesn't mean
MIKE_CARO anything in regard to the decision you must make.
MIKE_CARO It would be the same decision whether you put
MIKE_CARO half the money in the pot or none of it. You
MIKE_CARO simply measure the value of what's out there
MIKE_CARO relative to how much it costs to wager. That's
MIKE_CARO true in life, including stocks. END.
PP_TECH Roy has something to add.
RoyCooke That concept is HUGE in Real Estate also!
festiva Thanks to both of you!
PP_TECH Thanks festiva
PP_TECH Frost, your turn up to bat.
Frost do you feel there is a difference in bankroll
Frost needed online as apposed to a live game?
PP_TECH Roy, let's start with you.
PP_TECH festiva, can you please go to the rail so others
PP_TECH can get in the question cue?
RoyCooke Yes, I think you need a larger bankroll to play
RoyCooke online...The edge factor is much smaller as you
RoyCooke don't have visual tells and aids ...With a
RoyCooke smaller edge factor you need a larger bankroll to
RoyCooke make sure you keep in action! END
PP_TECH Mike? anything to add?
MIKE_CARO Everything Roy said is unarguably true. You
MIKE_CARO should also keep in ;mind that you can play more
MIKE_CARO than one game at once online and that you will
MIKE_CARO get many more hands per hour. That also may mean
MIKE_CARO you should have more cushion online.
MIKE_CARO END
PP_TECH thanks Mike
PP_TECH Frost, I hope that helps.
Frost thank you
PP_TECH tyvm
PP_TECH Tazshort, You are up!
Tazshort tournament question
Tazshort i have played in several limit no limit holdem
Tazshort tournaments and usually come in top 10%
Tazshort never any better
Tazshort 300-1,000 buy ins 150 to 300 players
Tazshort how can i improve ?
PP_TECH Mike, let's start with you!
MIKE_CARO Tazshort, first of all, you can't expect to
MIKE_CARO improve on that performance. That doesn't mean
MIKE_CARO you can't improve your game, but you've probably
MIKE_CARO been fortunate to finish in the top 10 percent
MIKE_CARO that often. I, myself, wouldn't have that high an
MIKE_CARO expectation. However, keep in mind that the best
MIKE_CARO way to finish high in a tournament, no-limit
MIKE_CARO especially, is to SURVIVE. That means you need to
MIKE_CARO sacrifice some normal-game edges. END
PP_TECH Roy, anything to add?
RoyCooke Mike is right in what he says...I do think that
RoyCooke some players that do not close tourneys do so
RoyCooke because they play to cash and not to win and give
RoyCooke up a big edge to aggressive minded players that
RoyCooke are playing to win...If that is an issue with you
RoyCooke you might need to get more aggressive when close!
RoyCooke END
Tazshort i think i need to be more aggressive
PP_TECH Mike would like to add one more comment
MIKE_CARO What Roy says about good players dominating
MIKE_CARO through aggression late in a tournament is
Tazshort never seem to have any ammo when late in the game
MIKE_CARO absolutely true, remember that there is a penalty
MIKE_CARO in a proportional payout tournament -- the winner
MIKE_CARO has to gather all the chips and then pay most of
MIKE_CARO the prize pool to competitors. Again, that means
MIKE_CARO play to SURVIVE! END
PP_TECH Thanks Tazzshort, I hope that helps.
Tazshort thank you
PP_TECH bluntking, batter up!
bluntking after winning several hands without showing, is
bluntking it ever correct to call down a big pair, even if
bluntking you know that it's beat?
PP_TECH Mike, let's start with you.
bluntking with a big pair?
MIKE_CARO bluntking, if I
MIKE_CARO understand your question, you want to know if you
MIKE_CARO should ever call, even if you know you're beat.
MIKE_CARO The answer that, if you're still having drawing
MIKE_CARO chances, yes if the odds are right. AND even if
MIKE_CARO it's a showdown and you're sure to lose, you
MIKE_CARO might sometimes call! What???
MIKE_CARO Because if your hand looks strong, such as in
MIKE_CARO 7-stud, you don't want your opponents to see that
MIKE_CARO you're bluffable. END
PP_TECH Roy, anything to add?
RoyCooke I never call when I am sure to be beat in order
RoyCooke to stop people bluffing me...I make a call or a
RoyCooke play at the point I think I am being bluffed! END
PP_TECH I hope that helps, bluntking.
PP_TECH PokerGod_1, your turn
PokerGod_1 after 5 straight winning months on here I've hit a
PokerGod_1 horrible month of cold cards and heart breaking
PokerGod_1 rivers
PokerGod_1 now i know there are swings in this game
PokerGod_1 but i feel like i can't make a right play
PokerGod_1 how do i get out of this slump with out losing my
PokerGod_1 mind
PokerGod_1 and ripping all my hair out
PokerGod_1 lol
PP_TECH Roy, let's start with you
RoyCooke Trust me ...I DO know how you feel :-)
RoyCooke I take breaks...go on vacations...Read poker
RoyCooke material and not play again until I am mentally
RoyCooke fresh and prepared to fight......END
MIKE_CARO MOST of the long-term profit in poker is made by
MIKE_CARO NOT adding to losses, instead of adding to wins.
MIKE_CARO That means that, although streaks like you're
MIKE_CARO experiencing can be expected, you need to
MIKE_CARO minimize the damage. END
PP_TECH Thanks PokerGod_1. I hope that helps.
PokerGod_1 just ride it out huh
PokerGod_1 ok tyvm
PP_TECH Beanoville, your turn.
Beanoville i have read all your books including sklansky and
Beanoville malmuth
Beanoville I'm not very good at statistics i need a good book
Beanoville about hold em statistics
MIKE_CARO You wanted to know about stats. Try Poker1.com,
MIKE_CARO which is affiliated with Planet Poker. There is a
MIKE_CARO complete stats library there, and more to be
MIKE_CARO added soon. END
Beanoville ok ty lost touch of poker mentor i see a long list
Beanoville tyvm
PP_TECH Thanks Beanoville. I hope that helps.
PP_TECH Sull, your turn.
Sull does a good no limit poker holdem player always
Sull play by odds and statistics?
PP_TECH Roy, let's start with you.
RoyCooke The best poker players are the players that read
MIKE_CARO Hi, Sull... The short answer is that EVERYTHING
MIKE_CARO sorry!
RoyCooke players minds and mannerism well.....Not the best
PP_TECH Roy go ahead
Sull ok, back to the books...
Sull ty
RoyCooke mathematician Let me start this over:
RoyCooke The best poker players are the ones that read
RoyCooke players minds and mannerism well not those that
RoyCooke are the best at math! END
PP_TECH Mike? anything you would like to add?
MIKE_CARO Psychology ultimately CAN BE REDUCED to odds and
MIKE_CARO statistics, but we think of it as a separate
MIKE_CARO poker science. To me, tells are almost as
Sull but you can't be really good without it, huh?
MIKE_CARO important as knowing pot odds, but some players
MIKE_CARO feel more comfortable just ignoring opposing
MIKE_CARO personalities and playing their cards. It's your
MIKE_CARO choice. END
Sull loved your tells book
PP_TECH Roy, an additional point?
RoyCooke I think being good at tells is MORE important
RoyCooke than knowing pot odds! END
Sull ty
PP_TECH Thanks Sull. I hope that helped.
Sull very much
PP_TECH Mr. Fox, batter up!
Mr.Fox thanks, I'm writing a book on my year long quest
Mr.Fox to become a poker pro, played my first game in
Mr.Fox march, and am getting to the realities of making
Mr.Fox a living doing it.
Mr.Fox I've looked at high end tournaments, but with
Mr.Fox house fees, tournament personnel fees and taxes
Mr.Fox they really aren't a good bet, and rake really
Mr.Fox kills low limit games, what do you think about
Mr.Fox ways that people can actually make a living doing
Mr.Fox this?
Mr.Fox keep in mind that i know it may not be realistic,
PP_TECH Mike?
MIKE_CARO OK, Mr.Fox... It's like this...
Mr.Fox but I'm making money, and it's really for the
Mr.Fox book.
MIKE_CARO Yes, the rakes are proportionally larger in the
MIKE_CARO smaller games, but the caliber of play is much
MIKE_CARO worse. Sometimes this balances, sometimes not.
MIKE_CARO What you need to keep in mind is that in high
MIKE_CARO rake games you'd often like to play against
MIKE_CARO bigger fields of opponents competing for the pot,
MIKE_CARO because then the percentage of rake is smaller
MIKE_CARO relative to the size of your win. END
PP_TECH Roy, over to you.
RoyCooke I see VERY few players making a living year in
RoyCooke year out from tourneys...i do see many making a
RoyCooke living at the medium limit games and higher...If
RoyCooke you want to make poker a career you are probably
RoyCooke best off in the middle limit ring games...where
RoyCooke you can make enough to live on and the
RoyCooke competition is not overly tough! END
MIKE_CARO I agree with Roy about tournaments and seldom
MIKE_CARO play ;them because profits are more consistent in
MIKE_CARO standard game. END
PP_TECH Thanks Mr.Fox. I hope that helps.
Mr.Fox Many thanks, I'll start working on my limit game
Mr.Fox again.
PP_TECH bucs 2002, Batter up!
bucs2002 in a NL ring game how would you both play AK pre
bucs2002 flop if someone raised very large before you
PP_TECH Mike?
bucs2002 or if its been raised and reraised before
MIKE_CARO I often would not play the hand at all. That's
MIKE_CARO in a tournament.
MIKE_CARO The reason is you're probably against a pair or
MIKE_CARO maybe THE pair of aces or kings and in no-limit
MIKE_CARO you want to lead, not call, and in a tournament
MIKE_CARO you want to survive. However, in ring games, you
MIKE_CARO would usually substantially reraised a medium
MIKE_CARO raise, but not always a large one. END
PP_TECH Roy, your turn.
RoyCooke It depends on the texture of my opponent...If he
RoyCooke only raise in that spot with a premium hand I
RoyCooke would fold...If he would fold many hands I would
RoyCooke likely reraise him.....How many chips he
RoyCooke has...What hand he would put me on would all
RoyCooke factor in...It is a tough decision that can be
RoyCooke played many different ways based on the texture
RoyCooke of your opponent! END
bucs2002 ok thanks both
MIKE_CARO What Roy said is important. The nature of your
MIKE_CARO opponents is what usually decides how to play AK
MIKE_CARO against a raise. I agree. END
PP_TECH Thanks bucs 2002, I hope that helps.
bucs2002 AK is the toughest hand in nl i think
MIKE_CARO AGREED
PP_TECH tonyo, your turn for a question.
tonyo did moneymaker winning the wsop shock you and has
tonyo the game in a casino changed because of on line
tonyo gaming
PP_TECH Roy?
tonyo or the way it's played
RoyCooke I did think Moneymaker winning was
RoyCooke unusual....That said, he deserves a lot of credit
RoyCooke for hanging tough in a VERY tough
RoyCooke situation.....Other players with little experience
RoyCooke have won the WSOP and the beauty of poker is on
RoyCooke any given day anyone can win....In regards to
RoyCooke online gaming I think it has helped live poker
RoyCooke greatly...The cardrooms in Las Vegas are as full
RoyCooke of good games as I have ever seen them....Many of
RoyCooke them came to poker through the Internet! END
PP_TECH Mike? anything to add?
MIKE_CARO No, that says most of it. Money maker
MIKE_CARO was great for poker and online play has enhanced
MIKE_CARO the popularity of the game. No arguments there.
MIKE_CARO END
PP_TECH Thanks tonyo, I hope that helps.
tonyo thanks guys ...you rock....
PP_TECH We have time for two more questions.
PP_TECH Sunny? your turn
Sunny I have a question ...last night i played head up
Sunny in a 15/30 8 o better stud game and my opponent
Sunny was disconnected FOU
Sunny R TIMES in a row on the bring in...why? and I
Sunny never received his $7.50 ...just the ante...why?
Sunny also why is the game down today?
PP_TECH sounds like a tech question
PP_TECH Tuesday am is maintenance day at Planet
PP_TECH usually every Tuesday from 9 am-11 am ET
PP_TECH I will have a tech contact you regarding your
PP_TECH connectivity issue. I hope we can help.
PP_TECH trogdor? do you have a poker question?
Sunny and where is the game gone to?
trogdor yeah
trogdor i have read everything by you mc
trogdor as well as slansky and hellmuth
trogdor but i still don't do very well
trogdor i bit less than break even
trogdor in all game
trogdor live or online
trogdor is there anything other than reading that i can
trogdor do to improve my game?
PP_TECH Mike?
MIKE_CARO well, trogdor, if
MIKE_CARO you've read everything by me and are losing,
MIKE_CARO that's not a good recommendation.
MIKE_CARO There are, fortunately, many great books today...
MIKE_CARO Roy has several that have even inspired me. END
PP_TECH Roy?
RoyCooke I would be persistent and focused...Keep trying
trogdor mostly i was wondering
trogdor if there is any way other than books
RoyCooke to learn....There are no easy answers...Poker is
trogdor like a tutor or sorts
RoyCooke HARD work! END
PP_TECH Roy? Mike? do we have time for one more question?
trogdor thank you, ill look at roys books
PP_TECH Thanks trogdoor
MIKE_CARO Yes, and trogdor should
MIKE_CARO look for interactive online lessons at MCU coming
MIKE_CARO soon
trogdor thanks
PP_TECH fordo7, last man standing?
PP_TECH final question please
fordo7 there are currently 4 poker shows slated for
fordo7 cablenetworks compared to only 1 last year will
fordo7 this accelerate the poker boom or has it already
fordo7 already peaked?
PP_TECH Roy? let's start with you.
RoyCooke I think it will continue to grow.....Many players
RoyCooke have become interested in poker through the TV
RoyCooke coverage and NBC, a major network is going to do
RoyCooke a WPT event on the day of the SuperBowl...That
RoyCooke should be great for poker! END
PP_TECH Mike?
MIKE_CARO Agreed. Poker has a lot more room to grow. That's
MIKE_CARO because it's not yet a mature market. Only a
MIKE_CARO small fraction of the population is aware of the
MIKE_CARO poker boom. So, yes, we're going to grow. END
PP_TECH Mike and Roy. Thanks for coming.
fordo7 ty boyh
MIKE_CARO It's been a lot of fun. I truly appreciate all of
MIKE_CARO you and your interest in serious poker. That's
MIKE_CARO what helps the game grow. Love you all. Visit
MIKE_CARO unitedpokerforum.com for discussions with Roy and
MIKE_CARO me. Bye. END
RoyCooke Thank you all for the good questions and I hope
RoyCooke you all learned something from the event...I
RoyCooke enjoyed myself and hope you all did too...Thanks
RoyCooke Again :-) END
PP_TECH Thanks all for attending. We will do it again
PP_TECH next Tuesday night
PP_TECH tyvm
