Hands in late position, mfs, 27. Nov 2003 09:20

I am beginning to feel that I need to loosen up. I have been a slight winner the last few months but it seems I could have won a lot more had I played more hands.

I have heard so many different extremes as to what hands people start with. For instance, I have heard people say they do not play anything worse than JT offsuite from the button. Others say they will play any unsuited cards down to 56 if the conditions are right. I just read in a book the other day that it is ok to call with 76offsuite it you are on the button with three limpers and the raiser to your right.

In the small blind I have heard of Kx offsuite being ok to call with.

How about hands like QT or KT offsuite? Do you come in from middle position with these?

I fully understand that it all depends on the game conditions, your relative position, and whom you are playing against, as to which cards you play.

I would really appreciate it if you could give me examples as to the different types of hands you will play in different positions. For example: " I will call from the button with........ if certain conditions are met ", or I will call from MP with...etc.

By the way, assume this is a lower limit game like 4-8 or 6-12 holdem.

Thank you very much!

mfs-

Lee Jones just had a wonderful article in CP (November issue) about blind play, in which he also talked a bit about button play.

I bring up his article because I also struggle with button play, as well as blind play, and found the article very timely. In a nutshell, Lee says that most winning players are looking for an excuse to fold in the blinds even before they see their cards, and conversely, they are looking for an excuse to raise on the button even before they see their cards.

This is a testament to the importance of position. Someone once wrote on this forum (I don't recall who), "If you can't FEEL the power of the button, then you don't understand position."

Anyway, I know that doesn't really answer your question, so here's how I generally play the button (keep in mind, I do struggle, so this may not be correct play):

1- I will generally play AXs in unraised pots (occasionally in a raised pot if I know the raiser to be loose-aggressive). If my 'X' is a T or higher, I will raise. Note, I will raise the same hands from the CO in an effort to buy the button, if I think it will work.

2- I will limp with connected cards down to about 6-5, depending on the table texture. Occasionally, if there is an EP raise, I will cold-call with a 6-5, 7-6, 8-7 just to see the flop, but only if I think the riases would only have raised with AA, KK, QQ or JJ. The reason is this: if I catch big on the flop, those hands will be unlikely to laydown and will pay me off big. This does NOT happen a lot. I'd say I've done this maybe once out of every 2-3 sessions of play. I know this play will generate a lot of controversy, but so far I've been happy with it. :)

3- I'll play any PP from the button, almost always pumping the big ones, occasionally the medium ones (depending on table texture) and rarely the small ones.

mfs,

It sounds like it would do you specifically a lot of good to read Lee Jones' book.

One particular sentence in the book is especailly profitable. Here is a paraphrase: "If you're on the button and the hand is folded around to you, RAISE if you were going to play the hand anyway".

Just understand that you have to know when to dump the hand if the blinds defend and the flop looks bad. But you will start getting a lot of action from the blinds after a while.
