OK, NOW I'M AFRAID THAT I AM (KINDA SORTA) INSISTING

THAT I GET RECOGNITION, AS A "MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR"

TONIGHT, I JUST "STUMBLED" ON TO MANY MANY MANY

RESPONSES TO MY WRITINGS:

PRIOR TO THAT, I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA, THAT

I WAS SUCH AN AREA, OF MAJOR MAJOR INTEREST!!!

I REALISE THAT YOU TWO, BEING FAMOUS AUTHORS AND

ALL, "PUT ME" ON JUST BEING SOME BUFFOON, AND AS

SUCH, UNWORTHY OF THE "MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR"

STATUS.

OK, SO I'M A BUFFOON, BUT . . . . I'M NOT just A BUFFOON!!

LOOK AROUND, GUYS, I'M MORE POPULAR THAN

GRITS IN AN ALABAMA COFFEE SHOP!!!

AND FUNNIER, THAN A LIBRARY OF JOKE BOOKS.

I RESPECT YOU TWO, WHY NOT RECEPROCATE.

(BY THE WAY, I WAS GOING TO MAKE THE CONCESSION,

TO HAVE ACCURATE SPELLING, BUT I'M AFRAID MY

FANS, JUST WOULDN'T HAVE IT. MISSPELLINGS, ARE

AN INTRIGLE PART OF ADAM THE EXPERT)

Adam -

I want to preface this post by saying that I in no way intend to diminish your poker knowledge. You seem to be well versed in theory and to have good experience. I have to say, however, that your posting style makes you seem like somewhat of a jackass.

First of all, I think it takes a pretty self-absored person to call themselves "THE" expert. You may be quite good at what you do, and maybe have expert knowledge, but you are hardly "THE" expert.

Also, the all caps thing: not too funny anymore. While cute and different when I first saw it, it has become a catch phrase on par with Gary Coleman's "Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis," and Urkel's "Did I do that?"

Finally, I take issue not only with your spelling, but your punctuation as well. So many commas. Its like you only left two of them unattended and they started f#$%ing like bunnies. Now they're everywhere.

Anyway, I didn't mean for this post to be a flame of any kind, and I sincerely hope it isn't received as one. As I said at the outset, I highly respect your knowledge and opinions, and I wish you to continue posting, albeit in a more subdued manner.

Keep up the good work!

- Big Todd

ok, only for this post, will i be more "subdued" if Adam the Expert was
"subdued" who the flock would want to read what i have to say?

i have decided to be much less "condisending" but i certainly
won't be less "subdued"

if I did that, I would no longer be Adam the Expert.

now, whoever said I was using the word 'the" as in THE "only"

it's merely a name, like Mack the knife Holly the hooters,

Nick the Greek, et cetera et cerera (that's "etc." to those of you
who belive in abbreviations.

I make no bones about the fact that I consider Mike Caro, to be

"THE" expert, with myself a close second.

Now, I am trying to say this politely, but what right does anyone
have to "take exception" to my spelling (or lack thereof) commas,
or anything else.

I am giving people the opportunity, to have whole new lives, to
learn an occupation that can earn them, many times what
they're earning now.

and I'm doing this all, for exactly bupkis!!

so, no one has the right to complain, that my writings aren't exactly
up to publishcation grade.

look at it this way: suppose there were 1000 people, who were
literally starving to death, and i had only $1000

do you think i should make a seven course gourmet meal for
20 or them, and let the other 980 starve???!!

or, should i buy 3000 pounds of rice, throw it in giant pots, and
let them all eat their fill?

there are people out there, who want and need their questions
answered, and i try to answer even the most simple ones.

I would rather have more answers, than ones with perfect
punctuation and spelling.

someday soon, depending on the vote of the public, i may
starting writing books, for the general public.

then, and only then, will people get great quality writing.

don't worry, i'll have my father edit them. he is a true genius
writer, and having benifited from a midwestern education,
extremely proficient in all the little goodies that mysteriously
seem to be so important to everyone but me
(writing skill, english language skills, punctuation, grammer)

but, i will thank you for the compliments.

if my detractors manage to get me removed from the site,

I'll just find another.

I will never be silenced

Hi Adam - I'm still very much a newbie at poker, but I have considerable experience at communicating in writing. So, for once, I might be able to offer some advice here instead of just picking other people's brains.

At the risk of sounding pompous, I chose that word - communicating - carefully. "Writing" is a mechanical process. Any baboon can learn spelling and grammar, and can paste sentences together to form a coherent paragraph. Don't worry about writing. Communicating requires that you put yourself in your reader's shoes and lead him/her carefully along a path of reasoning on the subject at hand. It's work. It requires that you think ahead and anticipate questions. Basically, you agree to shoulder more than half the responsibility of transferring your knowledge to the reader. It's not something that everyone can do, or wants to do.

A question you might want to ask yourself is, "Why do I write about poker?" If you have a genuine desire to spread your knowledge (which I'm guessing you do - a lot of smart people want to teach in one way or another), your success will depend in large part on how much of the responsibility of communicating you want to take on. If you're happy having a few Internet fans, you can just toss out the nuggets in whatever way is easiest for you. You'll be putting most of the work of understanding on your readers, and a lot of people just won't take the time or will be put off by the stylistic eccentricities (the "writing" part). If you're okay with that, or if you view your teaching as only being fit for the students who work hard to understand it, then there's no need to change anything.

BTW, that last part wasn't intended as passive-aggressive snarkiness. I honestly can't tell from your postings whether you're trying to help people, or get a kick out of feeling superior, or just like to rant and don't notice the collateral damage, or have decided that this Simon-from-American-Idol style will get you noticed, or what. I've met some people over the years who I thought were flaming wackos from their Internet postings, but turned out to be very nice people who didn't realize how other people were reading their words. We can all get a better read on someone in person than we can from just looking at the words they write. That's why it's important to work harder when all you've got is words to work with.

The answer to the question of what you want to get out of your writing will determine whether you want to work at harnessing that unique, entertaining, stream-of-consciousness style (a Hunter S. Thompson of poker, maybe?), or go on not getting the recognition you say you want.

> WELL, GUY F, THIS IS A VERY WELL-WRITTEN AND RESPECTFUL

POST, SO I AWARD YOU THE "ADAM THE EXPERT BADGE OF

MERITOUS CONDUCT"

OK, LET'S GO OVER EACH POINT:

FIRST OF ALL, WHILE I DO NOT KNOW WHO "SIMON" IS, OR

FOR THAT MATTER, "AMERICAN IDOL" , THERE IS NO ONE

WHO'S STYLE IS HAVE, OR EVER WANTED TO COPY.

I WOULD ANALYZE THAT THIS "SIMON" PERSON, IS RUDE AND/OR

MEAN, WHICH CERTAINLY DOESN'T REPRESENT ME.

I POST HERE, TO HELP PEOPLE OUT, AND DEMONSTRATE

MY PROWESS.

I HAVE FIVE OR SIX "PRO BONO" EMAIL STUDENTS, AND

HAVE SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME TEACHING THEM.

AS FAR AS ME CAUSING "COLLATERIAL DAMAGE" THIS

IS POPPYCOCK!!!

AND, I RATHER RESENT, YOU SAYING THAT!!!

IF PEOPLE FOLLOW MY ADVICE, WHICH THEY SHOULD HAVE

TO AT LEAST PAY ME THE PRICE OF A BOOK, TO GET.

THEY CAN HAVE THE LIFE, THAT MOST CAN ONLY DREAM OF

IT'S NOT HARD AT ALL, TO MAKE 100,000-200,000 A YEAR, ALL

FOR THE PRIVACY AND SECURITY, OF THEIR HOMES.

AND I'M AM TEACHING THEM, FOR EXACTLY BUPKIS!!

SO, YOU WOULD HAVE ME HAVE TO SPEND EXTRA TIME,

CORRECTING SPELLING AND GRAMMER, JUST BECAUSE

IT MAY BE "HARDER" FOR PEOPLE TO READ!!!

THIS IS LIKE SAYING, "OK, I'LL LET YOU GIVE ME A MILLION DOLLARS,

BUT, NOT BEFORE NOON, AS I LIKE TO SLEEP LATE, AND I

WANT ALL THE BILLS, TO BE WASHED AND DISENFECTED, AND

I WANT IT DELIVERED IN A LIMO, AND I WANT I WANT I WANT

INSANE!!!

]

IF I WAS STRUGGLEING ALONG, IN SOME DEAD END JOB,

AND SOMEONE WAS WILLING, FOR #%^%$#^@!^!#% FREE,

TO SHOW ME HOW TO GET RICH, AND THEY WANTED TO

THROW PIG GUTS AT ME ALL DAY LONG, I'D HAVE THE

GOOD SENSE TO SAY "THANK YOU SIR, THAT WAS A GOOD

SHOT"

BUT, I DON'T THROW PIG GUTS AT ANYONE, AND I ABSOLUTELY

REFUSE TO ACCEPT, THAT THERE IS ANYTHING AT ALL WRONG

WITH EITHER CAPITAL LETTERS OR DOUBLE SPACING.

NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST!!!

WHEN I WENT TO COLLAGE, IF YOU TURNED IN A PAPER THAT

WASN'T DOUBLE-SPACED, IT WAS AUTOMATICALLY REJECTED.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR TIMES TO CHANGE THAT MUCH.

I'M SURE THIS WHOLE NONSENSE STARTED BY ONE VERY

VOCAL PERSON, WHO REPEATED IT OFTEN ENOUGH, THAT

PEOPLE, LIKE LEMMINGS, JUST FOLLOWED IT, WITHOUT

BOTHERING TO THINK: WHAT'S ACTUALLY WRONG WITH

THAT?

NOW, FROM NOW ON, UNLESS SOMEONE IS ATTACKING ME,

I WILL TRY NOT TO BE CONDISENDING.

BUT, THE ARROGENCE, MISSPELLINGS, DOUBLE SPACING

AND CAPITAL LETTERS HAVE TO STAY. IT'S PART OF WHTA

MY FANS (WHO OUTNUMBER DETRACTERS, BY ABOUT 3-1

HAVE COME TO EXPECT.

IT'S PART OF THE CHARACTER.

ANYWAY, I DIDN'T MEAN TO GET SO HARSH, BUT I REALLY

AM OFFENDED, BY ANYONE THINKING THAT NOT ONLY

SHOULD I PROVIDE MY SERVICES FOR FREE, BUT ALSO

DO IT IN THE STYLE, THAT SOMEONE ELSE WANTS.

THE DAY I START GETTING PAID (WHICH I HAVE IN THE PAST)

IS THE DAY THAT PEOPLE CAN DICTATE THE MANNER IN

WHICH I WRITE AND TEACH.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE, GUY

Just to clear up the point about Simon The Mean Judge From American Idol... It is/was a hugely popular "reality" TV show recently where aspiring singers performed for a trio of judges who winnowed a field of hundreds down to a few finalists for a recording contract. Its popularity was due mainly to Simon The Mean. He made a conscious decision to play the bad guy and made nasty comments to the aspiring singers because he knew that controversy sells. Every story needs a bad guy, and he was smart enough to both recognize that and know how to manipulate it to maximum advantage.

Some people love - or love to hate - that strong-willed, brash, no-holds-barred style. It's kind of a niche market, but it can be lucrative just the same. John Vorhaus is having some success with it in the poker world, so there's definitely a market there. Find a good editor and start getting this stuff down on paper before you're too old to spend the royalties.

Who says it was, the media ? Or, the people trying to sell advertising time on it.
Oh I get it the neilsons said it was right ?
Basically the show sucked and was just another lame attempt by the Big 3 networks at a platform to sell you some imported foreign made crap.

The Only reality is that if some boy toy like Simon talked that way to any one on my block we would of spent some considerable amount of time scraping various body parts of his up off the pavement.

Its hard for me to believe the fact that some people view this as "quality Programming"

Simon is as big of a joke as the big 3 's programming. Its putrid drivel.

Oops, I done it again !

Bwahahahahaha!

Well Happy Thanksgiving Adam :-)

So, it is recognition you seek.

First, I do think your poker knowledge is pretty good....If you can actualize a good game over time, I have no idea....Those are different arenas.

Second, your English and writing skills suck...It doesn't make you a bad person or an unintelligent one for that matter.

Third, if it is the approval and recognition of others that is a psychological need of yours, I think you will do better to tone things down. You do have good knowledge and are intelligent...That will shine through and others will be more receptive to you and you will have more respect form others if you are not so condescending. That alienates anyone with insecurities ( In other words everyone).

Just some thoughts...I even mean well.....

Life is Good :-)

ah yes, roy cooke, the true gentleman!!! the grace and class reflected
by your writing style, is one of the reasons, that you are one of
the only three or four authors, adam the expert recommends to his
students.

now, let's be more correct: the english and writing skills,

THAT I EXHIBIT, suck.

remember, i'm not being paid, directly or indirectly for gracing this
site with my presense, so, why should i have to sweat out
spelling, style, english, or anything else

i only have limited brain power, and i'd rather be able to answer
more questions, than take the time and energy to look up
words in a dictionary.

(of course, Adam the Expert, will never, ever , never use a
"spell check" i will never have a machine, do my work for me"

now, another subject. people have accused me, of prending
to be "close" friends, with you and mike, merely because i
use your first name.

this is not the case. the only reason i use the first name, is because
i have earned the right to. kind of like one doctor, calling the
other by their first name, something forbidden by a non-doctor.

if i was just some beginner, i would never be so rude, as to
refer to Roy Cooke and Mike Caro, by their first names.

but, since i am (at least) at their level of ability, if not stature,
i use their first names.

by the way, Roy, I'm going to be in Vegas, in January, and hopfully

will be able to cook a gourmet meal, at the home of D. S.

(not David Sklansky, another D.S. who's privacy i'm maintaining

and I'd be honored if you would come.

ooops, i think i already sent you an email about this. oh well,

ADAM THE EXPERT QUOTE: HEADS UP, IS NOT POKER.

IT'S LUCKER. UNLESS THE OPPONENT IS VERY WEAK, JAND

EVEN THEN, THERE ARE FAR BETTER OPPORTUNITIES

AGAINST TWO PLAYERS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING,

HEADS UP, IS A MATTER OF LUCK.

SO, ONE HAPPENS TO FLOP A SET, WHEN THE OTHER HAS

A PREMIUM PAIR, AND SUCH AND SUCH.

DOES ANYONE REALLY THINK, THAT WHEN WATCHING THE

"FAMOUS PROS" ON TRAVEL CHANNEL, AND YOU SEE THEM

"STRAINING THEIR BRAINS" THAT THEY ACTUALLY ARE

DOING ANYTHING MORE, THAN MAKING THEIR BEST GUESS!!!

HERE IS A MATCH UP, THAT I WOULD ACCEPT.

THE CHALLANGER AND I, EACH BUYINTO A (FULL)HOLD EM GAME,

FOR THE SAME AMOUNT. WE PLAY EIGHT HOURS.

NEXT, WE DO THE SAME FOR STUD, OMAHA, RAZZ, TRIPLE

DRAW LOWBALL. AT THE END OF THE 40 HOURS, WHOEVER

HAS THE MOST MONEY, WINS THE SIDE BET.

THAT WOULD BE A TRUE TEST OF SKILL.

YOU MAY AS WELL PLAY "TIDDLEY WINKS, " TO PLAY HEADS UP

FULL GAME, IF YOU ARE SANE, HEADS UP, FULL OF LUCK.

Bull sheet you need hundred of hours at each to figure that out and even then if the players were close in skill like is likely the predominating factor.

Mike Caro worte about this before but I suppose since you dont use machines (I suppose your dictating your posts to someone who operates a computer for you) might of forgot about it since its been out of print for some time and now only commonly avalible online.
