I've lost a lot of money when more than one player (myself) included has made a flush but my "kicker" is lower.

If I have one pocket diamond and there are four on the board including the top diamond, why is the pot not split?

Top flush wins. Basically player with the highest card of that suit wins. Why because those are the rules. In holdem the only the pot is split with a flush is if the entire board plays.

Hi - The pot isn't split because you need five of one suit to make a flush. If there are only four to that suit on the board, then if both you and your opponent hold a suit to that board, the one who holds the highest rank card will win.

Example - If the board is say, J-10-6-4-2 with four diamonds, if you hold the Q but your opponent holds a K or an ace, then he wins.

The pot is only split when the entire board has five of one suit to it, and neither one of you hold a higher suited card that would make your flush higher than the one that was already present on the board.

ADAM THE EXPERT IS TRYING TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION,

SINCE HE IS THE TOP EXPERT IN THE WORLD, AT DEALING WITH

PLAYERS, WHO ARE TOTALLY NEW, AND MAY ASK QUESTIONS,

THAT WOULD APPEAR "SILLY" TO EVERYONE ELSE.

YES, I'VE TAUGHT MANY MANY MANY PEOPLE, WHO NEVER

PLAYED POKER BEFORE, SO, I'M AWFUL DARNED PATIENT

THERE IS NO SUCH THING, AS A "KICKER" WHEN YOU MAKE

A FLUSH.

IF THERE ARE FOUR OF A SUIT ON THE BOARD, THE PLAYER

WITH THE HIGHEST HOLE CARD OF THAT SUIT, WINS.

PERIOD.

IF THERE ARE FIVE SUITED CARDS ON THE BOARD, AND

NO ONE HAS ONE OF THAT SUIT HIGHER THAN THE

LOWEST CARD ON THE BOARD, THEN, AND ONLY THEN,

WILL THE POT BE SPLIT.

REMEMBER, A POKER HAND, IS ONLY FIVE CARDS,

NO SUCH THING AS A "KICKER" IF YOU MAKE A STRAIGHT

OR FLUSH
