Hi,

I was playing Hold'em tonight against 10 players and I went well over 50 hands without a win. I was playing fairly tight, but not excessively. Is this fairly common?

Thanks,

Carl

Yep, it's unfortunately pretty common... but, on the bright side, equally common is having almost every third hand playable and 50% of those with decent flops.
When you're on the cold card side, I do think it's worth a try once in a while to limp (if you can) with trash in LP just to try and steal a pot or two. Since you're folding almost all the time, other players are likely to take you pretty seriously when you bet. This usually works pretty well if you are careful in picking the right time to do it--you just have to make sure that these attempts are likely to make a net profit rather than an additional loss over and above what the blinds are probably already eating up.

I regularly go through spells of 50 to 100 hands with only 2 or 3 wins.

Those are boring, but money wise not too bad. What really hurts are the spells of getting beat on the river. The other day I lose 6 of 7 showdowns 5 on the river. (I was betting aggressively, trying to drive the other players out). That cost me a bit of my bankroll.

(of course I have also won a few on the river)

Hi,

Even though it was a very unxeciting night's play I still ended in profit on the night. Out of maybe 150 hands played, I won about 5. It was good experience, especially for maintaining discipline and patience.

The danger cards are the big hole pairs, AK etc. which will lose you a lot of money if things aren't going your way.
