I swear every time I make a straight I get beat by a flush. I mean, there are 9 outs at the River for cryin' out loud.

Who made up THAT rule?

There really are more straights than there are flushes, although it seems counter-intuitive if you take the last card you have to draw to (8 outs for open str8 vs. 9 for the flush). But if you actually work through all the ways to get both, you'll notice that, given a random first card, there are enormously more second cards still allowing a straight than there are flush cards. If you take a 7c, for example, (cheating a little since it has full extension) there are 32 (!) second cards that still allow making a straight within five cards but only 12 that allow making the flush.
