How do I play this?, noiseboy, 26. Nov 2003 12:09

It's raised in EP, I reraise in MP with KKs, another player calls, an LP player caps and everyone calls, I don't really know much about the capper. The flop comes with an A, something like ATx, rainbow I think. The EP player checks, do I bet this flop with a cold-caller and the capper still behind me to act? What if it's two suited, bet or check?

I'm sure I'll be called weak-tight for this reply, but think this is a check-fold situation. You've got a capped pot with 4 players. I'd guess you're facing AA or AK (or both) and are drawing dead or close to it. There's no reasonable chance there's a weak ace you can push out with a bet.

It stinks, but I think you're beat and have little chance of bluffing your way through.

Depending on the players, you may want to bet your hand once and plan to fold if you get raised. With 4 callers, it's hard not to put someone on an Ace, but a bet may force someone with Axs to fold.

On the other hand...If your bet succeeds, you win very little. If your bet fails, you could lose a lot.

Still, depending on the circumstances, I might bet at it once and see what happens.

My play here would be quite different from what has been stated. I would most definitely bet out at this point but only to see what unfolds. For this bet there is NO POSSIBLE way to make a weak ace fold. If there is a weak ace in there that would mean he called 4 bets preflop and I would bet my bankroll he wont let this ace go for 1 bet on the flop. That said I would bet out to find out where im at. There is a possibility you still have the best hand and worth finding out if you do because of all the bets in the pot already. I could go on but there are just too many things that could happen after you bet to extrapolate on. Pretty much after the bet if your raised and called in 2 spots or checkraised you have to let it go. But if your raised in just one spot with no other callers its going to take your read on this player to proceed with the pot.

That what I'd wished I had done, as it turned out nobody in the four-way capped pot had an A, somebody picked up a 2nd rag pair on the turn which I folded, and went on to win.

Less than four way, I'd bet the flop without much thought, but with four players capped, I just thought for sure that at least one A was out.

It is interesting that someone points out the 'four people' thing.... I call it my rule of four.... if there are four or more people in the hand, someone has that 'death' card that you dread. If the person that bets it doesn't have it.... well I can't say much about how smart they are for attempting to bluff out that many people.

Right, I know that four players is the cutoff. In a capped pot, it becomes very borderline what to do based on my read of the capper and the cold caller.

Normally, I'm only in there bluffing with three or fewer opponents, but in this case, since someone's already checked to me, I could have the best hand. If I get raised, then I KNOW an A is out there and can fold with a clear conscience. It's pretty borderline either way, with three opponents, I think I HAVE to bet but with four I'm not sure.

There's a world of difference between an A-T-x flop and an A-9-x flop here. There's a huge amount of bets in the pot and there are only 4 other people. If you assume the capper will only do so with KK and AA, it's only 3 to 1 for him to have AA. Remember Sklansky. If your hand is unlikely to be good, but if it is, and you bet, everyone will fold, you should likely bet. Hence, the large difference between flops, as people will call with all sorts of gutshot draws with the ten on board, and it will be very tough to tell where you stand. If there's no probable gutshot draws, I probably would have fired once. The pot is very large at this point, you have to take a shot.

Hey noise-

Depending on the table, and what I think of the players, I will most likely bet out like the flop made me extatic and see what kind of reaction I get. If everyone folds off and I win a small pot, I will be happy with that. If I get raised, then I'll assume I'm drawing dead and fold.

Moz/Lee,

Just curious....

What would you do if your bet is called, and the caller checks the turn also. Do you bet again or take the free card? What if he bets out on the turn, do you fold?

(In these situations, when I think "If I'm raised I'm dead," I'm often confused about how to interpret a call.

Yeah, often this is when I get really screwed, because I get outplayed. But here is my take on it anyway:

If he calls and checks the turn, then I make him for a draw. He's either on QJ and waiting for one of my Ks, or in the case of the 2-suited flop, he's on a four-flush. So I bet again. If I'm right, he'll fold or call again, depending on the size of the pot.

If the turn is a scare card, like my 3rd K, that's usually where I get screwed, because he'll check-raise the nut straight on me, and I won't let go of my set in hopes of filling up on the river.

I'd probably take a free card on the turn and call the river, but it could go either way. Depends on the opponent.

this seems like the best play to me, just take a stab and hope something good happens. I guess I didn't like the cold caller and capper behind me, so I just assumed I'd get raised.
