Key Hand from UPF Tourney, mkpoker, 24. Nov 2003 23:08

Having browsed the entire hand history for the recent UPF Tourney, I think this was the key hand. I'm posting just for entertainment value, though anyone is welcome to comment on the course of play.

The previous hand, Beigs was eliminated when he pushed all-in preflop with KQo and I called with AJs. Beigs was shortstacked and had to make a stand...just got unlucky there. His departure gave me a fairly healthy chip lead with about T4500. Three players were effectively tied for 2nd at 2,500.

We're six handed, and from the button (with blinds of 100/200), I'm dealt JTo. All fold to me, so I raise to 700, hoping to take the blinds. Dr.Don calls from the SB and I figure I'm beat...unless I get real lucky real fast. The flop comes 5dKc9s, leaving me with nothing but a gutshot draw. I'll fold to any bet, but Dr.Don checks. I check back.

Turn comes 4d. Again, Dr. Don checks. I think about making a bluff, but I figure Don must have something to have called my raise. Maybe a low pair or something like AT? Still don't know if I should have bet here, but I check back.

The river is the magical Qs, giving me a straight and the absolute nuts. Dr. Don leads out with a suspiciously low T200 bet (into a T1,600 pot). His bet means one of two things: either he's got a big hand and is trying to trap, or he's got nothing and is making a weak attempt to buy the pot. Either is fine with me, of course...I'm raising.

I want to make a bet he'll call, so I raise to 1,000. Dr. Don reraises all-in and I quickly call. He turns over QQ. The river made him a set...and me the nuts.

After that hand, I had nearly a 3:1 chip lead on the field. As the blinds rose, playing catch-up was tough (especially since I continued to get lucky with nice cards). 30 minutes later, we were done.

Anyway, thought you'd all find this hand interesting. It obviously worked out for me, but I wonder if I should have bet the turn. Don's decision not to re-raise pre-flop was certainly pivotal and I'm sure will spark some debate.

Incidentally, I'll post up some ideas for the next tourney over the next day or so.

Hey Champ,

Don had three chances to get you off the hand. Preflop, after flop and after turn.
I think I would have bet all three if I had to. I think he had you on AK and stuck with that.
I like his teaser bet on the river though it was very hard to put you on J10 there and you took the bate, unfortunately you did have the lousy J10.

A few hands later when we were down to 3 I got QQ I think it was in the blind. Lee ( schuster ) makes a huge bet ( 1600 or so , still like to know what you had there lee AK-JJ? ) I go all-inn here and which is just enough to scare him and he lays it down ( something you see rarely online ). The point being he may have AA or KK and he beats me ( 8.4 % change on full table ( angel? )). But the chances he is on a steal or semi-steal are a lot bigger.

But then again you had a killer stack and was on a rush.
All in all I had a great time playing some normal poker, although I have never ever not shown my cards for 1.5 hour and still have a healthy stack.
I find myself playing pretty well under these circumstances ( lost my KK yesterday in big tourney against 56d preflop heads-up which kills my game and confidence.) but these games are hard to find.

Hope to play again soon.

Keep on learning:)

tommyhawk.

B.t.w If you can find the time could you sent me the stats to tommyhawk@planet.nl would be very nice..ty.

I really don't remember what I had that hand, but giving me AK - JJ is way too much credit. I think the entire time I raised before the flop, I got played with 5 times. Twice someone was all in for calling the raise, once someone flat called, and once I got played back at and let the hand go. The last time was my foolish final hand. So, I was raising extremely light... K8o, J7o, anything remotely playable... it worked about 95%, so I figured, why not? =)

During the tourney, Lee demonstrated a larcenous streak so bold it would make Winnona Rider blush.

It helped that Lee had the best seat at the table. The 3-4 players to his right were comparatively passive and rarely played without the goods. As a result, hands were very often folded to him and he (appropriately) made big bets with light hands. I hated to watch it happen, but I was reluctant to play back with junk.

Lee made a huge comback at one point, and took take the chip lead based almost solely on the proceeds from his blind steals. But, unfortunately for him, he ran into a few better hands at the end.

Interesting hand. I think you were completely correct in not betting the turn, although it surprizes me that Dr. D didn't take a stab at it there. In your position, I would think betting the flop would have at least been something to consider: With Dr. D's pre-flop betting he shouldn't have AA or KK, and a checkraise attempt with AK (or KX) on the flop would seem at least somewhat unusual to me (unless he really likes to checkraise). With your pre-flop raise, it would have been very easy for him to put you on AA, KK or AK--or at least K with pretty decent kicker.

I'm sure a key hand for me was the one on which I busted out.
I can't really remember any of the hands.
I do remember that I had to leave to take a friend to the airport at the (first) break. I think I was the chip leader, or close to it, at that point.

Anyone care to refresh my memory?
