| Went down to Pechanga Casino to beat up on the locals, but was short on cash so I played the 3-6 HE and I got worked. I actually think that I played better then usual and I walked away satisfied with my play, but I have decided to come to the conclusion that in poker, in the short run, luck ALWAYS defeats skill. I saw my mark when I got there, a stacked up player winning luck draws, basically playing pretty bad. I sat to his left as soon as the seat opened. He ended up with all my stacks too. An example.: I'm Dealt AK on the button, he raises from BB, I re-raise He capps. 3 players left. Flop comes K-4-6. He bets, I raise he calls. 2 players left. next card is 7. He bets I raise he calls. Next card is 8. He bets I call. He had K5 off suit. It happenned like this time and again. Watching last years WSOP again on ESPN last night, I see Moneymakers plays and can't help but think that luck dominates skill in poker. Maybe I should start to gamble more when I play, why not? | ||

| An ammendum: Watching WSOP on ESPN the other night, I remember Farha (a true professional high limit gambler) at the final table. During the interview from earlier he said something interesting. He said that he plays very well against "good players," but poor players were almost like a crapshoot (I'm paraphrasing ). | ||

| Hi. You are right. Luck DOES dominate skill in poker. Luck dominates skill in any form of gambling. Let's look at craps and roulette. Every single day, people win money playing those games. People are getting on airplanes today leaving Vegas with the casino's money. Should the casinos close? (Here I'll answer it for you). No. Because the casino has an EDGE. That edge, over time, will result in a huge win for the casino, regardless of who gets lucky or how lucky they get. I you play poker with an edge, you will win. There are two problems with this: 1 - It may take a long time for that edge to assert itself. 2 - You may in fact not have one just because you think you do. But if you do, you will be a winnner after a few thousand hours. BarryT | ||

| aggreed, for a while it was very hard for me to conceptulize the large picture because my lack of experince and hours played, but then I watch pro's and seasoned tourny players who have been playing for 30+ years and think.. Damn, losing $500 in a week is nothing compared to playing a good solid game in the long run. All to often we like immediate results, to be satisfied right at the momnet, such is what gambling represents, but good players know that that is the illusion that card rooms and casinos like to throw out so that they attract the casual player looking for a good time and willing to pay for it. poker especially hold em poker is a great game because it offers the player alot of control, control that cannont be looked at in terms of months or maybe even years. Then again, this is just the stuff I ve read and heard through out my studies, I have not experinced these qualities first hand so who I am to say right? | ||

| I have taken these bat beats against bad players. I moved to a higher stakes table and these bad beats slowed down. I tend to get up and leave if I am at a table where more than half the players are gamblers and newbies. Secondly, over time this player will lose, hit the ATM and hang in there. -Blazman | ||

| I don't think MM is the greatest player in the world, and from what I've heard from him, he doesn't think of himself that way either. However, a lot of the plays he made were based on reads which were almost always correct, other than the hand with Brenes where he got completely lucky. It's a far stretch though to call a player that aggressive a "bad" player. I don't think Farha would call him a bad player either, even after defeating him in the heads up match. But yes, luck does dominate in the short run. That's why the bad players keep playing with you even though you always start out with the best hand, and the suckers in Vegas keep throwing money at games like roulette even though they are destined to lose. | ||

| I actually like Moneymakers play. I do think that its refreshing and sometimes very successful to play "unconventionally." Many times I play a similar mixed style where I do play less than premium hands just to advertise and take down pots. And Moneymaker definitely had one thing going for him over everything else, he played the players. I was more or less referring to Farha's comment about bad players, which he made before he even sat down on the final table. I am %100 sure that MM would not have chased the gutshot runner runner draw that I described earlier. Also I was playing 3-6 HE, in NL I would have taken the that player's mortgage in the long run. I do believe though that Farha was a better player than MM, and would have taken him down 7 out of 10 times. Then again, I should probably be alot more critical of myself than these proven players. -----------------------------------R : ) | ||
