Question about Big Tourney strategy..., Sean Spitzer, 24. Nov 2003 11:35 | ||

| Does anyone have good advice for a solid strategy for tourneys with lots of players (500 or more)? I've done a decent job finishing barely in the top 10%, but that usually doesn't pay to well. Sometimes I think I played to tight well other times I think I'm stupid for playing to loose. I know tourneys have a lot of factors (and luck), but how do the pro's finish in the money so often? I know one reason is because they're pros, but does anyone have any insight into their strategy? I heard an interesting comment from Hellmuth about a WPT event a few weeks ago. He said he never put all his chips at risk (w/o the nuts I assume) until it was down to the final 6 people. Thanks for any comments. | ||

| I recently asked a friend of mine the same question. He pointed out that the pros start with more chips in relation to the blinds and have longer rounds before the blinds are raised. For instance, in a UB multi-table tourney you start with 1000 chips and 5/10 blinds, or 100 times the big blind. In Daniel Negreanu's article in a recent CardPlayer he noted that for the U.S. Poker Championships they start with 20,000 chips and 25/50 blinds, or 400 times the big blind. Also, the betting rounds are at least 3 or 4 times longer. These factors amount to professionals being able to use their skills more rather than being forced all-in. | ||

| I notice on Party Poker and Empire, the tourneys start with very few chips which is definitely an advantage to less skilled players. I like Poker Stars because they usually start the tourney with more chips which does help. | ||
