Where's the encouragement?, bigtizzle, 24. Nov 2003 00:14

So my friends and I are running our home poker game tonight and we play for incredibly piddly amounts. $5 buy-in with 5 cent 10 cent blinds. It's either Hold'em or Omaha 8/B, and you can bet up to a dollar at any time, with three raises maximum. I consider myself to be the best poker player at my home games. In fact, I don't want to be cocky, but I know I am. While all the gamblers and maniacs that I play with may hit a big night or two throughout the course of the month, my records show a steady increase in my bankroll. I've made it known to these friends of mine that I would someday like to try my hand at professional poker. I'm only 20 and have some credit card issues, but once I'm financially straight in a few years, it is my most treasured dream.

Sorry, I go off on tangents sometimes. The meat of the story is that the game begins to die down and I'm left playing heads up with a good friend of mine. I keep hearing all of the guys who aren't playing anymore but are watching telling me "Hey, big buy, if you're gonna go pro, you should be able to make short work of this guy, hahahaha!!" They say it in a sarcastic tone that upsets me a bit, seeing as how I am very serious about my ambitions. So I end up losing to my other friend (cards like ice; plus this guy couldn't get pushed off of a hand with a bulldozer) and all I get is taunts about how if I can't even beat a friend heads up for such little money, how would I ever be able to play against pros for such large amounts of money.

Now, I know that they are just ignorant to the idea of poker being long run, but I was still kind of hurt by their lack of encouragement. Has anyone else ever been treated so shabbily by people who you thought would be supportive? I'll bounce back eventually, so I don't worry about that, but does anyone have any advice about how to deal with that kind of . . . pressure, I guess is what I'm feeling. I can usually let stuff roll off of my back, but this is different. All of your thoughts and feedback are greatly appreciated.

- Big Todd

Hey Big Todd,

First.....Don't let anyone interfere with your dreams.

I'm sure under different circumstances your friends would be happy for you - but because they actually play a part in what you're trying to achieve, they're probably a little intimidated by you -(and hey, that's okay too). Keep in mind, If your strengths are playing in a full ring game, then make sure you recognize that and try not to get involved in playing somebody in a heads up match - So for now, play with your friends, beat the pants off of 'em, and quit the game when the others leave as well. If you want some experience with heads up play and you don't want anyone commenting to you about it, and you don't want to lose your money practicing.......then try to sit in one of those heads up play money games just to get some confidence and perhaps just a little feel for it...that's all. I know it doesn't play like real money, but hey, it's a start. Best of luck to you. Don't give up.

Todd,

Sorry, I am not calling you Big Todd - sounds like something your girlfriend would call you and I ain't going there ;)
You just keep plugging like 4Poker said. What you're going through is perfect training for going pro. Seriously. When you're sitting next to the guy who's vying for "Worst Poker Player of the Year" honors and he's beating you with 92o because it's "his favorite luckiest hand" and explaining to you that you shouldn't have outta raised with them there aces cause aces never hold up, just ask anyone - well when that happens a couple of years from now when you are a pro, you're going to think back to all that training your friends gave you for free and you're going to be able to smile, look them man straight in the eye and say just as friendly as can be - "Well, I've always been a slow learner - but I guess I outta start listening huh!" And then just keep on playing your disciplined, expert play.

if you plan on going pro, or at least taking up poker as a serious hobby, you need to work on your emotional tilt.

So do your friends, but they didn't post
