Poker MIllion on Fox Sports, Urban Chaos, 23. Nov 2003 17:11

Was flipping channels here in Los Angeles. Fox SPorts Net is currently showing the Poker Million from the Isle of Man.

It's pretty awful. The players are on a half-table, and one of the primary cameras is behind the dealer...so we get to see the dealer's back all the time.

After looking at their cards, the players must slide them onto a glass surface so the cameras underneath can see them. There are multiple problems with this...the surface s reflective. And the announcers aren't often shown what the cards are.

I don't know if this is live, but the editing is just atrocious.

There seem to be three announcers...two I don't know...one is Phil Helmuth. Phil is doing well, and one of the others is loud and excitable, nearly shouting and almost getting out of control aby time a player moves all in. One hand, a player (#1) moved in (with J-6), the next player (#2 with pocket Tens) called...the next player (with pocket 7s) folded. The flop came K-9-J...Helmuth announced that a T or a Q would give the win to #2. An eight came. So Phil announced that any of the four Queens, any of the two Tens, and any of the four sevens would get #2 the straight. (WHAT? Any of the TWO sevens you mean...we've already watched two of them get mucked!)

Before that, another player went all in and the one announcer got so excited and loud after we saw his hand, the board was then displayed and we were told he lost...but we never got to see the winner's hand because the camera followed the loser out the door.

I'm all for poker on TV and expanding the awareness of the game...but did the people at Fox even WATCH any of ESPN ot the Travel Channel's coverage? Did they just stubbornly say, "We're going to do it differently" without realizing that those other shows have something GOOD going? Because this coverage is scattered and choppy and awful...it's nearly painful to watch.

LOL the mistakes just keep on coming...

One player with 3-3 faced down all in vs a guy with A-2.

The flop came 5-A-10 (I think)...the turn was another 5...the river was a 2. So the 3-3 lost and was out of the game.

Moments later, they revisit the hand using graphics, showing it step by step. At the end, a graphic comes up showing the hand makeup.

#1 has A-A-5-5-10

#2 has 5-5-3-3-10! um....NO guys...wake up... #2 has 5-5-3-3-A. Sure what difference does it make what the kick card is when he's already lost....it's the principle of providing good TV coverage. If you're going to put up graphics to teach people about the game, DO IT RIGHT.

I flipped back and forth between the Poker Million and a reply of the World Series of Poker 2003 on ESPN. I was also unimpressed with the setup. However, I enjoy the game of poker for the play and not for the camera work or the commentators so I still enjoyed watching.

Me too. Problem is, if they're not doing a good job of SHOWING me the play, then what am I really watching? (wink)

Bad camera work, bad direction / editng, and bad commentators CAN detract from the quality of what we're shown, and that was VERY TRUE in this case.

The only thing I think they did that might have detracted from the experience was not being consistent in showing what the players were holding. That bothered me for the first few minutes but then I decided to pretend I was watching the game live or even playing in it in which cases I wouldn't know their hole cards, anyway.

I am not saying that it wasn't a crappy production; it was. I still think all the petty annoyances were pretty easy to ignore, though. I'm just glad to see poker spreading to more TV venues. I am sure it will get better as more networks become interested in televising the sport.

It sounds like they have copied the format from the show 'Late Night Poker' in the UK and is probably produced by the same team. Until recently this was the only poker available on TV in the UK. This program was show on channel 4 which is one of our main channels and as such has been responsible for introducing poker to a large number of people in the UK (including myself).

I also understand that it was a video of one of the early episodes which convinced US TV execs that Poker could be televised in a format that allowed the viewers to see what was going on in each hand rather than having to wait until the cards are turned over ( this may be incorrect but was in an article I read but can't find now).

So whilst I agree that the coverage style is now looking dated (first televised 1999, winner Devilfish), the production team should be congratulated on bringing poker to the mainstream.

Was that the 1M Pound tournement? If so, it was the first time they showed the cards on TV. It was absolutely wonderful compared with the television of the day where the announcers had to guess what the players had unless the hand went to fifth street.

If I am thinking of the right tournement, this is the father of the WPT.

This wasn't a great production by current standards, but it certainly helped inspire what's happening now.

I'm not sure, but I think that tournament was from 3 or 4 years ago.

If it is an old production and helped get poker on TV, then I applaud it.

That said, it was nearly unwatchable compared to modern TV poker.

Heh, guess I'm spoiled.

I saw it also Urban and it was almost painfull to watch. The announcers could not follow the action at all. They did not know who was betting or how much. One time an announcer told us that there was a big raise and Howard Lederer had to tell him that the dealer had not even shuffled the deck. The production was horrible. I hope they do a better job for the Sands tourney on Thanksgiving.

yeah, the hand where he said one person was the aggressor.... and howard corrected the announcer saying "no those were just the blinds"

It was too painful for me to watch for more than 20 minutes.

Compared to EPN'S world series and the WPT, I agree the Poker Million broadcast was horrendous.
