How I lost my bankroll in 2 hands, BoatLover88, 23. Nov 2003 12:51 | ||

| I started poker at the beginning of the summer. I studied it a lot and practiced hard over the summer. At the end of the summer I was able to consistently beat a sucker. I put $100 online and practiced and studied harder. I slowly made a bankroll and moved up limits as I felt I was ready. After a month and a half of online play I built around $1600. Like all poker players who are dominating middle and semi high for internet stake poker online, I got cocky. I moved over to NL 5/10 blind $1000 max buy in and NL 2/4 blind $400 max buy in over at UB. I was doing farely well and braking around even or with a little bit of profit by grinding away and rarely bluffing. Tight aggressive play was keeping me around. So a few days ago I have about $1500 in my stake at NL 5/10 blind. I have 4 4 in the hole at LP. I call and see the flop. Flop comes 4 6 8 all spades. The BB raises to $45. I decide to call. I'm slightly afraid of a flush caught already so I'm afraid to reraise. This player has about $1700 so I know he is capable of putting me all in. The turn comes a 6. I have a full house. He bets $150, I raise him all in. He calls. River comes a 5 of spades. He turns over 7 9 of spades for a strait flush. I remain calm, but lose $300 more to a very rare bluff shortly after. I'm down to about $400 remaining in my bankroll so I move down to 2/4 blind NL and put in my remaining money. I have K J of clubs in the BB. Flop comes 2 5 6 of clubs. The SB bets large. I figure him for the nut flush draw and I move all in right away. A LP calls and so does the SB. Turn comes an 8 of clubs and river comes a 10 of clubs. The LP caller has 7 4 of clubs for a strait flush and the SB had the ace high flush. I was left with $8.50 in my bankroll and am now at $30 from $0.10-$0.25 blind NL. What I need is advice on how to keep myself from selfdestructing my hard earned bankroll again if I ever build it back up. And please don't just say don't play in that high limits with such a small bankroll. That is the problem. Nothing I could of done would keep me from wanting to go there. I still feel like I can beat that game even though it took me for all I have. Does anyone have any schedules or special plans/goals they set for themselves when wanting to quickly move up or good ways to avoid losing bankrolls. I simply couldn't control myself. Maybe even some relaxation techniques for after losing big pots. Any ideas for people who have gone through this would be greatly appreciated. I know some of you pros at some point have screwed yourselves. Thank you. | ||

| Boat, I hope this post doesn't sound moralistic or patronizing...but the facts remain. $1,600 is not an adequate bankroll to play NL poker with 5/10 blinds. Even you acknowledged this in your original post! Even more troubling in your posts are words like: "Nothing I could have done would keep me from wanting to go there. I still feel like I can beat that game even though it took me for all I have" and "I simply couldn't control myself." Boat, listen to yourself! Think seriously about whether you're controlling your game or it's controlling you. I strongly suggest you take some time off and see how easy it is to handle a break. Remember, if you can't play within your means, you're headed for a major fall...a lot worse than losing $1,600 in two hands. Good luck. | ||

| Clearly this is not a big enough bankroll, even the best player can run into 2 second best hands in a row, and when that will take out your entire bankroll you will eventually get screwed. I have over 6K in available funds dedicated to poker and do not play NL at stakes that high... I hope you realize the reality of the situation by the time you build up your bankroll again... Good luck, ReMMy | ||

| I understand I should not do this. That is why I was wondering if there are goals you all set for yourself or a special limit you find suitable for your specific bankroll. Or ways to keep yourself from playing that high. | ||

| I have all my accounts attached to Neteller, I withdraw the amount above and beyond what is needed to play whatever limit/game I am currently playing, that way I have to actually go through the process of adding funds before switching limits. For example, I usually play .25/.50 NL, or up to $30 NL 2 table tourneys on UB, so whenever my BR reaches 1k, I withdraw $200 to Neteller. It's still available for poker money, but its an extra step to get at it... Maybe that would help you move up in limits when YOU are ready, not when you're BR is ready... | ||

| Wow, very sorry to hear about that! It pains me just thinking about it. I'm still in the phase of aggressively trying to build a poker bankroll and have the following basic guideline: Never make a buy-in for greater than 20% of my available poker funds. I think that's a quite aggressive figure, and I plan on tapering off once I get built up a bit more. But it does stay fairly safe at the lower numbers (which, in a real pinch, I could compensate by putting more into my account--at higher stakes I couldn't, and would essentially have to build up all over again if I lost it all). | ||

| Sometimes you will go on a bad streak. With 1600, I think the 100 or 50 buyin tables are better. It's not anywhere near enough for the 5/10 table. I was doing so great at NL on UB, for a while, but then I took about 10 really bad beats in a row. People calling me with two pair when I had a made flush on the flop, people hitting two outers to a bigger set when I had a set, running into quads when I had a FH, etc... And this is all completely normal, if you play long enough you are going to have some long streaks of people drawing out on you and you need to have enough money to withstand it. | ||
