Big Early Hand from UPF Tourney, mkpoker, 22. Nov 2003 21:42

Curious what others would do in this situation. We're EARLY in the tourney. Blinds are 10/20. Everyone still more-or-less with the T1000 chips they started with. Table is super-tight, essentially a "bet it and take it" situation.

From MP, you open-raise for 80. A UPF regular with much NL experience calls immediately on your left. BB (also a respected UPFer) calls. The BB is currently the short stack at T740.

Flop comes AQ9 rainbow. BB bets out for 220. You've got top pair, good kicker and (remote) str8 prospects. What do you do? I call (probably the worst option, in retrospect).

Turn is 2s, putting 2 spades on the board. BB goes all in 480. Calling would leave you with about T200, if you lose. What do you do? I fold.

All thoughts welcome.

Would be easier if we knew what your hand was. =)

I suppose that would be preferable. I held AJo, flopped top pair, pretty good kicker. With no pre-flop re-raise, I thought it was unlikely--though possible--anyone held the super-premium hands that could beat me--AA, KK, AK, or AQ.

Sorry for the bad post...head still spinning from the yesterday's tourney. P.S. UB sent me the entire hand history for the tourney. I can email if anyone's interested.

Could you please send me a copy of the hand history? Send it to jim@nortx.com if you can. Thanks.

I think this is a big mistake. Flat-calling is better than 80, but 40 or 50 is good I think. There are so many problems with betting 80 that it ...well, I'll try.
-It (4XBB) announces "I have a good but not great hand and don't really want to get called" That's what's going through the head of a shark when he sees you do this.
-You build a bigger pot with your surplus (>40-50) wager, which induces bluffs and aggression by MIS (move-in specialists) on this and later streets. That's bad when you hit the flop like you did.
-In a tight-aggressive game with skilled players, sharks will fight to be the first to repop you hard preflop, in which case you fold and have turned AJo into 27o.
-It's even worse if you get called by multiple tight aggressive players, and the flop you got was a classic example. No matter what flop you hit, it's unlikely to be nutty.

Ruh-Roh. You are soooo dead.

The BB's bet makes me think we are going to get all of our chips in before showdown. I have gone broke too many times in NL with top pair any kicker to have anything to do with this hand after the flop, so I'd fold and live to fight another day.

Just My Thoughts,

My opponent from the BB also held AJ. We would have split the pot had I called. BB's strong turn bet essentially put him all-in and I feared he might have just called with AQ pre-flop and now flopped top two-pair. Didn't want to go out early...so I mucked my AJ.

When you're called with AJ, you usually have to figure someone has a better hand than you. When the BB bets out really big again on the turn, you have to muck. Your hand is fairly weak. And boy do I not like calling in the big blind with AJ that early in the tournament. No pressure at all and AJ is not a good no limit calling hand.
