Limit SnG Hand....AQs, mkpoker, 21. Nov 2003 21:48

All confident from having read BarryT's recent 3-part SnG saga in CardPlayer, I entered 3 limit tourneys on Party (and never finished in the money). I'm still not sure how I should have played this hand and would welcome others' opinions.

Ironically, I was focused on avoiding the two common mistakes Barry identified ("squandering chips" and "rushing to get all in"), but I think I did BOTH on this hand. What do you think?

Limits just raised to 75/150. 7 players left. I'm somewhat short-stacked at just under 800 but there are many players clustered around that chip level. I've been playing OK so far, just haven't picked up many cards.

Finally, from LP, I'm dealt AsQs. Two limpers to me. I raise. BB and limpers call. Flop comes Qd8d3h. I'm feeling pretty good, though obviously not crazy about the flush draw. All check to me. I bet, only MP player calls. His stack is about the same size as mine.

Turn is 9h. MP checks. I bet, MP check-raises. I don't know what to think. Maybe 99? Or 88 for a set on the flop? Maybe a semi-bluff on a flush draw? Regardless, calling the turn check-raise is the key decision for me. If I call here, I'll obviously call a river bet and that will put me nearly all-in. If I fold, I'll be the low-stack, but I'll have a chance to come back.

I call. River is a blank and MP bets out. I call, leaving me virtually all-in. MP shows 99 for the winning set.

Lemme have it. Should I have mucked to the turn check-raise?

you should have mucked on the turn. His check raise screams set or JT for the made straight. At this limi in the tourney, players will be dropping out very quickly. Also... even at the low stack, in the Party SnG's, one hand puts you right back in the game. Stay patient. Don't get involved unless you know you've got a winning hand.

Without being cynical or anything, if you're a good player, which I absolutely gather you are, the only advice I can offer is that if you're going to play SnG's, play them on UB or Pokerstars. The structure is much more favorable than Party. Just a thought. Sorry it's off topic.

I thought he had the straight as well, sets are sneaky like that especially with that kind of board. I wonder if the preflop raise here changed the thinking on drawing to a two outer, not that you shouldn't preflop raise that hand...
I have a basic win three decent hands to place in the money theory... Take three decent pots with ABC poker, back away from marginal pots that I may have but there is now serious question as to whether my hand holds up. I usually only pay it off if I have massed the chips to gamble or have witnessed a betting pattern that warrants a call or a reraise... Sometimes I get a tighter table, and it scares me.
