Is this allowed?, grateful1, 21. Nov 2003 14:19

Last night I was playing a no limit hold 'em game with some friends when a situation came up that I feel is not allowed. The player with the short stack went all in after the flop. I called and so did another player. From here the other players said that we put those chips aside and keep on playing the hand without the player who called all in, creating two separate and different pots. One pot was the bets from his all in call, and the other was played with just me and the other player who had called. The two of us finished playing the hand as if were the only two players. When the hand finished the player who made the all in call beat me and the third guy. He was given the "1st pot". I had the second best hand and was given the "2nd pot". Does this sound as stupid to you as it does to me, or is this actually a legal play?

I assume that you havent been playing very long? This happens all the time and is the correct way to play.

It's a bit hard to follow in your post, but I believe the situation you're describing is a simple "side pot," and yes, it's a standard practice.

The principle is that when one player is all-in (in a limit or no-limit game), he can't win any money put into the pot after he was tapped-out. BUT the other players remaining should go ahead and fight it out for the rest of the hand. However, they are only playing for the "side pot"--the main pot can't be added to once the short-stack's all-in bets are called.

Again it was a bit hard to follow, but it sounds like the following happened:

The short stack had the single best hand and won the "main pot"
You had the 2nd best hand and therefore won the "side pot" (remember, the short stack had no interest in the side pot, because he was tapped out before it was created).

If that's what happened, the hand was played 100% correctly.

WELL, ADAM THE EXPERT IS TEMPTED TO MAKE A SARCASTIC

RESPONSE, SINCE THIS APPEARS TO BE A JOKE.

BUT, HAVING BEEN AROUND FOR A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG

TIME, AND SEEN IT ALL,

I CAN IMAGINE THAT IN SOME FAR CORNER OF THE WORLD,

THERE JUST MAY BE ONE PERSON WHO NEVER HEARD

OF A "SIDE POT"

I GUESS THAT PERSON IS YOU!!!

TEE HEE!!

GRATEFUL, I CAN SEE THAT YOU ARE A "HOME GAME" PLAYER,

AND HAVE NEVER PLAYED IN A CASINO.

APPARENTLY, YOU HAVE NEVER EVEN WATCHED A CASINO

GAME.

OK, THAT'S FINE, EVERYONE HAS TO LEARN SOME TIME.

IN HOME GAMES, VERY OFTEN, THERE IS NO "ALL IN" THAT

IS, A PLAYER WITHOUT THE NECESSARY CHIPS TO CALL,

MUST JUST BE "LIGHT" AND MAKE UP THEIR "LIGHTS"

AT THE END ON THE HAND (IF THEY DON'T WIN THE POT)

BUT, IN THE REST OF THE KNOW WORLD, WE HAVE WHAT

IN KNOWN AS THE "SIDE POT" AND, AS IS THE CURSE OF

DEALERS EVERYWHERE THE DREADED "MULTIPLE SIDE

POTS"

IN CASINO GAMES, AND NOWADAYS, MOST HOME GAMES,

THERE IS THE CONCEPT OF "ALL IN"

THAT IS, A PLAYER CANNOT TAKE OUT MORE CHIPS, DURING

THE PLAY OF A HAND, AND CANNOT "OWE" THE POT FOR

THEIR SHORTAGE.

THEY CAN ONLY WIN THE OPPONENTS BETS, TO THE

EXTENT THAT THEY CAN COVER, THEN, ALL ADDITIONAL

BETS, ARE PLACED INTO A "SIDE" POT, THAT THEY CANNOT

WIN. JUST AS YOU DID IT

AS FAR AS WHETHER ITS "LEGAL" OR NOT, THAT WOULD

DEPEND ON THE RULES THAT YOU HAVE ESTABLISHED FOR

THE GAME.

IF YOU ARE DOING "LIGHTS" THEN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE

DONE THIS. IT JUST GIVES TOO BIG AN ADVANTAGE, TO

THE "SHORT" STACK. IF HE HAS A BIG HAND, HE CAN

SAY "OK, I'M LIGHT" AND IF HE DOESN'T SHE CAN SAY

"i'M ALL IN"

SO, YOU ONLY DID, WHAT MOST OF THE REST OF THE WORLD

DID. IF ANYTHING, YOU JUST GAVE YOU AND THE OTHER

REMAINING PLAYER, A DISADVANTAGE
