Post flop play when capped preflop, iceman5, 21. Nov 2003 12:57

Lets say I get JJ UTG. I raise and get a total of 4 callers (5 with me). The flop comes J42. If one of the blinds bets, I would just call to keep as many players in as possible and then raise the turn.
Now lets say I get JJ UTG and raise but it comes back to me capped. I call the 2 bets. There are the same 5 players and the last raise came from the SB. The flop is J42. I have to assume some of the holdings are AA, AK, maybe TT. So heres the question...The SB put in the last raise so I assume he has AA or KK. He bets. Would it still be correct to flat call or should I start raising immediatley assuming that some of the players will call 2 bets anyway because the pot is so large and they may still think they have the best hand? There are probably only a few cards that can beat me. Maybe one ace, 2 kings, maybe 2 queens. Maybe less if someone also has AQ. So with so few cards that can beat me should I raise right away or still wait for the turn to raise?

I would bet the flop, with that much action pre-flop there is no value in slow playing. People still have over cards and pairs and have great odds to re-raise because of the huge pot.

A flat call with easily make them correct in trying to hit their 20 to 1 shot. Having to call 2 bets cold will make them incorrect. Gotta raise in this situation. Plus, someone with a big overpair is very likely to 3 bet, and then you can get it capped on the flop when you are a big favorite to win.

I would bet the flop and let someone raise, then decide if you want to reraise, or go for a check raise on the turn, depending who raises and who stays in.

Thanks for the replies. This hand actually happened to me today. It has been so long since I actually had what looked like the probable winning hand when it was capped preflop, that I played it like I would play a normal hand (waited and raised the turn). I won a large pot but it shouldve been even bigger.

If you have somebody like me, or any aggressive players in the pot, do not bother with a slowplay. The thing is on a flop like that, people will come after you with AA, KK, QQ and AJs and there is a high likelihood that some of those hands are out. I'd probably go all the way with AA or KK, in most instances, first because I thought it was good, and by the time I figured out that it might not be good, it would be a huge pot, and I'd probably pay it off grudgingly.

The time to slowplay your set and try to squeeze out a BB on the turn is when the flop texture indicates that you opponent doesn't have much or many outs to beat you and you aren't multi-way.

ICEMAN, you must start raising at once to protect your hand, and keep raising so those jerks must pay to see you. ljh

If there aren't any pre-flop raises, slowplaying the top set is alright. The problem is that the flop may not get bet and you end up losing bets rather than gaining bets. This depends on the table and what you think will happen.

When there are 5 players capping pre-flop, the pot is so big that you should want to win it right away. You can check-raise the flop, but do not slow play the flop. You want all the drawing hands out, and if they won't leave, make them pay the maximum.

Slowplaying when the pot is small and you want to build a bigger pot. When the pot is already big, do what ever it take to win the pot ASAP.

Raise. The key here is that the pot is already big and you should do everything in your power to win it right there OR at least make the AA-QQ's call two bets for their 23-1 shot. MUST raise.
