| i met a few people at my school who have small (5-8 people tourney style games) buy in tourneys, 10-20$s. Here is the deal, only 1st and 2nd can win any money and they always start out with a real small amount of chips, around 20 or 40 dollars( SB 25cents BB50cents) witch changes every 30 mins or so in increments of 50 cents. To me this is very fast and high or i may be wrong??? Let me describe a little of the play through out the night: I am a some what of tight player and like to play good hands but anyway. I sit down and start asking about how the game goes ,,,yada yada yada. So we sit down and every hand they rabbit chase if people folded before the flop or before the turn came out and they always talk about how they would play there hands like if it was a school essay.....this is good for me. I play very few hands but the ones i play i seem to loose more than win , but the wins are usually huge. Everyone is play fair to good hands but they like to BLUFF A LOTTT TO make people fold. The problem is I FOLD WITH THEM........what can i do to stop this????? So i kinda just sit back and wait till people get kicked out...so its about 3 or 4 hours in and i am in 3rd place with about 45 bucks in chips compared to the 1st and 2nd who have more than triple. I wanted to go all in a few times to get more chips but everytime the 1st and 2nd place guys were in the hand they either got a straight or a full house, so im almost scared to move in or raise. please help ?!! | ||

| Don't play scared. If you always think the monster under the bed is there, you won't get anywhere. Fact is, you're gonna have to go all in at some points and win, find the right times to do it and be confident that you found the right time. You've got to be more aggressive. And the betting/blind structure you described is pretty normal for a tournament, if anything it's conservative. Eli on 21. | WELL, THE FIRST THING I'LL SAY, IS THAT IS SOUNDS AS THOUGH YOU ARE, OR ARE TRYING TO BE, A SERIOUS, WINNING PLAYER. AS SUCH, I CANNOT SUBSCRIDE TO YOUR SPENDING THREE OR FOUR HOURS, TO WIN SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY. SOMETIMES, I TELL MY STUDENTS TO PLAY A PARTICULAR GAME, WHERE NOT MUCH MONEY IS INVOLVED, BUT WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE EXPERIENCE, AND IMPORTANT LESSONS. BUT, IN THE FORMAT YOU DESCRIBED, THERE IS NO REAL WORLD EQUIVALENT, EXCEPT FOR THE SINGLE TABLE EVENTS ONLINE (ALSO KNOW AS SIT AND GO) BUT, SINCE THE ROUNDS ARE SO SO SO SO SO MUCH SHORTER, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO APPLY ANY EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM YOUR "HOME TOURNAMENTS" TO THE ONLINE EVENTS. NOW, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, TO QUOTE ROY COOKE, "IT DEPENDS" WHICH IS IT, $20, OR $40?? THERE'S JUST A HUGE DIFFERENCE THERE. AT FORTY, WITH A BIG BLIND (SEE, I TYPED IT OUT, YOU CAN TO: RESIST ABBREVIATIONS, AND THEY WILL FLEE) OF 1/80 STARTING STACK SIZE, THIS WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A "SMALL" AMOUNT AT $20, IT WOULD MOST CERTAINLY BE "SMALL" AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO PLAY MUCH MUCH LOOSER, OR "GO THE WAY OF BROOMCORN'S UNCLE" (FROM: SUPERSYSTEM BY DOYLE BRUNSON, MIKE CARO, DAVID SKLANSKY, BOBBY BALDWIN, AND ONE MORE) MEANING: YOU WILL BE ANTED TO DEATH. MOST HOME GAMES THAT ADAM THE EXPERT KNOWS OF, ONLY HAVE THIS TYPE OF TOURNAMENT, AS A "GAME STARTER" IT'S DESIGNED TO LAST ABOUT AN HOUR, TO HAVE FUN, AND GET THE PEOPLE TO COME EARLY. THEY ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, AND IF YOU WANT TO MAKE MONEY IN POKER, AND PROGRESS IN YOUR STUDIES, YOU SHOULD NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. IN FACT, IF I EVER HEAR OF YOU PLAYING THESE AGAIN, I MAY NOT HELP YOU WITH ANY MORE ANSWERS, WHICH ARE OF COURSE, MORE VALUABLE THAN GOLD. ADAM | ||

| Hey Adam, the kid obviously ain't no pro, and taking home 150 bucks for a 4 hour session ain't bad for someone ..... lacking your... expertise. These guys he's playing sound like a bunch of suckers, and if he can place in the money just under half the time, that ain't a bad place to start. | ||

| SEE YOU AT THE TAJ or TROPICANA. Well thanks a bunch for sounding like a prick of the board on this site. I was truly offended by your comments. Im 21 i go to school in NJ and i play with people to get a few bucks. I am not a pro but i consider my self to know the ropes..and play well. i do not have a bank roll of 20,000 to play what you think is worth what i explained in fact i have made more money doing those little tourneys then most people i know.............20$sx 8 people in 3 or 4 hours is worth it in my world in your world probably crap but in mine its a nice time and a good buck. All i wanted to know is if the chip amount was too small for a tounry ..seems like your ego of professional poker playing went a little over board. Maybe next time you should think about what you say !!! Let me ask you this ,,,,,do you play poker how you answer peoples so called pathetic baord posts..(you must be a bastard at the tables man) ,,,but i may be wrong ..i dont know you ,,,,.because if you do i realy hope to play you soon .. your favorite poker pallllll,...ps....sorry if i am harsh....but you are uncalled for, MATT on 21.
