| I've become a very good player at the kitchen table hold 'em game, but have very little casino experience. I'm looking for a great comprehensive book to take my game to the next level and beyond. Something that has info that I can't just find on the internet. Does anyone have any recommendations? I want the good stuff, not some hogwash about using zen to become one with my opponents, or some lengthy chart on strong starting hands. Real actual advice and strategies. Obviously I'm not advanced, but I'm looking for a book that can help me progress to that level some day. Thanks! | ||

| If you're just starting out, I'd recommend Lee Jones' Low Limit Holdem book, and Alan Shoonmaker(?)'s Psychology of Poker After you've been playing a little while, pick up Sklansky/Malmuth's Holdem for Advanced Players and Sklansky's Theory of Poker Then you may want to add Mike Caro's Book of Tells | ||

| The book you're looking for is Hold 'Em Poker For Advanced Players by David Sklansky & Mason Malmuth. It is the best book for learning hold 'em concepts & strategies. | ||

| I am also looking for a book to buy. I just have a question about Slansky's book. I have read Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" and would like some more reading. I was looking to buy Slansky's "Hold'em Poker," but everywhere I look, people are telling me to buy "Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players." Is everything in HEP covered in HEPFAP? If not, should i first read HEP before moving onto HEPFAP? I have just started playing very recently and am still learning a lot. | ||

| I don't see no real reason to get HEP if you're getting HPFAP. The only reason to get HEP is to notice the differences, and some minor specifics in HEP that is not in HPFAP, like that their advice is for "normal" tables where the flop percentage is about 40%. Tells you not to take their preflop advice too seriously. I'm not a big fan of HPFAP. It's a poorly written book. -URF | ||

| WELL, I HATE TO SAY THE OBVIOUS, BUT JUST IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF IT, THE WORLD-FAMOUS SKLANSKY/MALMUTH HOLD EM BOOK, IS THE STANDARD BY WHICH ALL OTHERS (OTHER THAN MINE, IF EVER COMPLETED) ARE MEASURED. OF COURSE, I WILL GIVE YOU THE SAME ADVICE AS I GIVE EVERYONE. HOLD EM, IS A BINGO GAME, WITH ONLY A LITTLE SKILL. AND, AS IN NO LIMIT, THE PRIMARY SKILL, IS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE LEARNED. THE ART OF HOLD EM, IS NOT WHICH HANDS TO PLAY IN WHICH POSITION, BUT IN DETERMINING WAYS TO CAPTURE THE POT, WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A HAND, OR, A VERY POOR ONE. THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MASTER HOLD EM PLAYERS, AND THE ALSO RANS. ANY STOOGE CAN FLICK AWAY A K J IN EARLY AND MIDDLE POSITION, BUT ONLY A MASTER, CAN PICK UP POTS, WHEN NO ONE HAS ANYTHING OR PICK OFF BLUFFS. THIS IS THE TRUE ART OF HOLD EM. IT'S HARD TO ACTUALLY MAKE ANYTHING, SO YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO WIN, WITH NOTHING. EXPERIENCE WILL HELP, ALOT, BUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE "HEART" "INSTINCT" "GUT FEELING" OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BECOME A TRUE HOLD EM EXPERT. FOR NOW, LIVE BY THE MALMUTH/SKLANSKY BOOK, AND YOU SHOULD DO AT LEAST OK | ||

| While I haven't read Zen and the Art of Poker, I wouldn't write the topic off as "hogwash." I plan on reading it at some point. I appreciate views on the game from all angles. | ||

| It is my understanding that you have not read any poker books before. If I am wrong, the following might not apply to you. If I am to recomment one single book for you to get, it would be "Internet Texas Hold'em" by Matthew Hilger. HPFAP is too vague for a beginner. And I am not a big fan of it anyway, despite everyone saying it's the best. "The Theory of Poker" is a must have eventually, but it won't teach you any specifics on how to play. "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones, and "The Complete Book of Hold 'Em Poker" by Gary Carson can be good choices if you know that you are only going to play in really loose games (half or more of the players staying for the flop in general). If you want to learn how a real poker player thinks, read anything that Roy Cooke has written. But that is not the basic stuff that you need at first. "Middle Limit Holdem Poker" by Ciaffone and Brier is to recommend too, I'd say, when you expand your library. Good luck. -URF | ||
