A difference I didn't expect, Boftx, 20. Nov 2003 14:42

For what it's worth, here is an observation I have on what I consider to be a major difference between online and live tourney play.

I was doing quite well until I was moved to my 4th table and found myself between 2 players who were *constantly* talking to each other about the tourney, other players, girlfriends, etc. As much as I tried, I could not block out the conversation going thru me and I'm sure this affected my play.

I can now see why Walkmans are so popular.

For anyone who has not played a live tourney, be prepared for the disctraction created by conversations going on around you. I didn't expect that, and paid the price accordingly.

BTW, I lasted for about 2.5 hrs. We were down to 8 tables on level 6 from a start of 26 tables. I certainly made a few mistakes, but hopefully have learned from them.

Another difference:
Live tourneys don't offer the luxury of being spoon-fed the other players' stack sizes. One has to constanlty monitor the chip transactions and make educated guesses based on this (and good eyesight :) I definitely have improvements to make in this area.

That's a huge difference in ring games too. It's hard to figure out your pot odds if you don't know whats in the pot
