Open-end straight draw - when to lay it down?, Carlk73, 20. Nov 2003 06:54

If you were drawing to an open-ended straight draw on the river and you were head to head with another guy who bet on the turn (let's just assume that whatever he has can't beat a straight) which made the odds 3/1 to call when the chances of catching an out card is approx 5/1, would you call and work on the implied odds that would come into play as your opponent would most likely bet on the river?

First, this is a pretty rare situation. Usually, by the time you reach the turn, the pot is laying you odds of much greater than 3:1. This would only happen if there were few pre-flop callers and the flop were checked around.

BUT, if I were in this situation, I'd lean toward a fold, but my actions would depend on answers to a few questions:

1. Might the bettor fold (to either a semi-bluff raise on the turn or a bet on the river)? If the bettor plays weak-tight, you might be able to win whether your card hits or not. If you think he's capable of a laydown, you should be more likely to stay in (or raise).

2. Is your potential straight obvious, or well-hidden? For example, if you hold KQ and the board is TJ56, the bettor will shut down (and probably check/call) if a 9 or A hits on the river. But if you hold 47o and the Board is A56Q, he'll probably keep betting if a 3 hits on the river. So your implied odds really depend on how well camoflaged your str8 is.

Bottom line: this is one of those "it depends" situations. That said, if:

A: The bettor was a calling station and/or my str8 was an obvious one, I'd probably fold on the turn; but if

B: The bettor could be bluffed AND my str8 was well hidden, I might call (or even raise as a semi-bluff).

Hi,

Thanks for your insight. I think it also depend son what limits you're playing. At the lower limits, bluffing is almost always a waste of money as people will call with almost anything!
