| Anything goes here. Whatever you think is cool. I started with 5 colors of "dice" chips (500 total). These are fairly nice 11 gram chips, but they do not have the clay smell and feel. THey are very close though. I got them for $0.20 a chip on Ebay. The bad thing was I didn't have enough of one color (175 was my max per color) to play a decent ring game. We played mostly tournaments, but even then too many colors can get old. I now have a set of about 700+ Paul Son (top hat and cane) chips. I have 400 of one denomination, then 100, 98, 48, and a spare 60 for emergencies. So far we have only used the 400/100/48 combination and it was more than plenty for games of up to 8 people (haven't had more people at the table yet). The Paul Son chips are absolutely fantastic. I would estimate I payed an average of $0.50 per chip for these, but I also have 560 with an elaborate design (not just the starburst). All were purchased on Ebay (you have to be patient and be willing to pass if the bidding gets out of hand). I would recommend the following: Buy the best chips you can afford (i.e. Paul Son level if you can) and get 500-700 for a good starter set. I would want at least 300-400 of one color/denomination. After that I'd say 100-150 in the 2nd denomination.I would only go for a 3rd denomination after you have a good set of 500 chips locked up. As far as color/design goes ... buy what *you* like. OK, ramble mode off now ... good luck in your hunt for chips. p.s. We mostly play NL holdem, 0.10/0.20 blinds, $10 max buy-in. We've had as much as $130 in the game (due to rebuys). | ||

| Like Tex says, buy whatever you want and like. We have 500 of the dice striped chips he mentions (actually 1500 for tourneys but mostly just break out the 500 set). We originally bought 350 white, 100 blue, 50 black. using this as 5/10/25, this was too few blue, too many whites. So the next order we got 250w, 100blue, 100 greeen, 50 purple...now we use this most often, 5/10/25/100. This works well, but again it always seems like too many whites, too few blues. So the last batch we got 200w, 200blue, 100 red. We switched our main set to have 200w, 150blue, 100 green, and 50 purple. That works perfectly fine. As the night goes on we cash out some and bring in the reds. Our break down is: white = 5 blue = 10 green = 25 red = 50 purple = 100 We only use black for tourneys, at which point black = 100, and purple = 500. Obviously you can break this down to cheaper limits, like nickle/dime quarter which we play with family a lot, then it is just white= .05, blue = .10, etc. I get my chips from prestobeat sales on ebay. 500 dice striped in an aluminum case, plus some dice and 2 packs of cards (not a big deal for us, we have a few hundred decks of cards from one of the casino's here, their left overs) for 125, with hrm, 7 or 8 colors available? Check one of the other threads recently about a link straight to their store. | ||

| I got a set of 500 and did 250,150,100 which seems to work fairly well. For example if you do a $1/$2 game with $0.5/$1 blinds the 250 chips would be $1, the 150 chips would be $0.50 and then the 100 chip would be a big denomination like $10. This works pretty good but people do end up buying some of the 250 chips with their 100 chips. Basically just the 250 and 150 are put in the center and the 100 are used to buy playable chips from other players. Ideally for a ring game I would have gotten 50 more of the $1 (250)chips and 50 less of the $0.50 small blind chips. The truth is you just don't need to play small blind chips that much and if you are calling in the small blind you can take the small blind chip back and put out a $1 chip. However the set-up I have does work well too and it also works well for tournaments so I'm happy. (going 300, 100, 100 might not work as well for tournaments) It's nice to have lots of 2 colors for playing with and then a 3rd to represent a large value. For tournaments I just give these chips a large value difference. If you start your blinds at 1/2 and everyone has 1000 chips you can make these chips 1, 10, 100 and still have enough chips for everyone. There will be a certain amount of trading chips between players when they run out of a color though. Then 1's can be 150, the 10's the 250's and the 100's are the 100's. This way with 7 people you can give each one 20 1's, 28 10's and 7 100's for 1000 chips... which is okay but might require some chip trading. Even with 10 people it's not too bad but there will be more chip trading. Obviously the more people playing, the more chips you have is ideal but you can stretch 500 chips a long way. Personally I would rather have 3 colors and have more of each color than have 5 colors and less of each. | ||

| When planning out my 500 chip set, I planned it on a spreadsheet and considered buy for $20 ring games and T1000 one table (10 player) tournys. I landed on a standard casino set (sort of). I do not know if blue is standard for $50 chips or $10 chips, but I planned on $50 for blue. Dosent really matter. My set (50)Black , 100ea =5000 (50)Blue , 50 ea =2500 (100)Green, 25ea =2500 (150)Red, 5ea = 750 (150)White, 1 ea = 150 Total Value = 10,900 That equals $109 for a penny game $1090 for a dime game $10,900 for a dollar game and the T1000 for 10 players in a tourny This is more than enough for my current needs.
