| After playing poker for just 6 months now I still class myself as a beginner and I really need help with a little problem of mine. It's the dreaded tilt factor. Actually I don't really think it could be classified as tilt, I just seem to make some really stupid decisions at times that often come from nowhere when I've been playing reasonably well and they always cost me dearly. EG. Just finished 10th out of 10 in a sattelite and went out on the first hand I saw a flop on. UTG raises the minimum. I flat call with AQo (I really think I should have raised to thin the field). Theres 2 additional callers, as well as the SB and BB. My AQ doesn't look very strong against 6 players. Flop is 489 rainbow. Everyone checks and we see the turn for free which is a Q. I'm thinking "nice, top pair top kicker". Someone bets the minimum, I raise all-in (why I'll never know) and get two callers. River is a blank. other 2 players in pot check it down and cards are flipped and I'm beaten by 89 (two pair). I know from all my reading and playing experience that someone could be holding connectors in a multiway pot from MP/LP but for some reason I choose to ignore this and make a big mistake instead. Despite knowing what I should be doing I still go ahead and continually play the odd extremely bad hand every now and again that leaves me smacking myself around the head. Why do I do this? are there any remedies? What makes it worse is that when I sat down to play this sattelite I kept telling myself "no more stupid mistakes" over and over again in my head. It just goes to show that knowledge isn't everything in poker, I don't claim to know alot but I keep ignoring what I do know for some weird reason. It's putting into practice what you know that counts. I'm off to re-read a few sections in some of the books I've picked up recently "Hold 'em excellence from beginner to winner" by Lou Krieger Page 135 "The desperate hours", Page 129 "Poker Mastery in minutes". Chapters 2 and 15 from "Caro's fundamental secrets of winning poker" where he talks about playing your best all of the time and gives his final winning affirmation and many chapters from John Vorhaus' book "killer poker online" which is mostly about preparing yourself psychologically for the game. I really need the inspiration right now. Any other tips/suggestions most welcome. Peter | ||

| Hi Peter Try slowing down.....When you think of a move think for 10 seconds about if it is the best move......Keeping a slow pace will stop you from making impulsive decisions Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 19. | As I was reading this, as soon as the Q came I would have been long gone. I would have put someone on JT. You have to take it easy early on in these things, players will call with just about anything in the first few rounds..... | ||

| You do not need poker books--you need a psychiatrist. Why would anyone go all-in without the nuts on the first hand of a tournament? Especially when there are several people still in the hand. Sure, they might all fold, but it is more likely that at least one will call. kennycatkiller | ||
