| In a 50+5 at party. 5 handed with blinds 100/200, i've got 1800 and the guy immediately on my left about 6000 amazingly with the rest having about 700 to 800 each. One off the button i find KK and make it 500, the big stack immediately on my left calls and the rest fold. Flop comes 3 9 10 rainbow and i bet out 800 feeling uneasy but hey no ace right? He reraises me all in and i decide hes prolly got Js or Qs and call him, hes got 10s and takes me out when sitting tight and i'd of gotten in the money. Now this isn't a pity me post, what im wondering is if there is anyway around that which is a good play, raising the kings more PF or laying down after the all or checking the flop to see what he does? What ya think? | ||

| I think you played the hand fine assuming you had no additional read on the player. He just as easily could have had an inferior hand but since he had the chips to put you to the test he can make that play. Thats the way tourneys go, play your best game and hope that the unlucky hands happen against people with smaller stacks...sometimes it doesn't. | ||

| I wouldn't have played it differently, maybe raised more pre-flop but if I did it would be negligibly more, so not likely to knock out a TT. Remember that you want someone with that hand EVERY TIME you have KK. Sucks, but such is poker. Eli on 19. | This is a tough one to swallow. There aren't too many things you can do differently. You can raise all-in hoping to shut him out but then you might run into AA (happened to me last night in tourney) or he might just think he has the best hand, call, and hit trips anyways. Without a really good read on the player, it's tough to lay down such a strong overpair. I hate the thought of somebody trying to bluff or buy me out when I have such a strong hand but there are times when you have to lay down these hands. You have to bet the flop since you are ahead almost everytime. It's only when a very weak player called and flopped some crazy two pair or in this case the guy had the most legitimate hand possible (pocket 10's before the flop) that you are behind. If it seems he's a very legitimate player you might have to suck it up and fold. Cloutier talks about laying down sets to huge raises after he's show strength. It's just very hard to do those when all you have to is click call when you hold KK. | ||
