Look in the Books, Videos, and Learning Tools section. My favorite for beginners in low limit is the Lee Jones book. There are a number of threads on great books.

Play money will help in the very basics. You can learn what hands to flop and practice the technique. After the flop, you can identify what are best hands that can be made and practice the basics of when to bet, raise, call or fold.

This is about as far a play money goes. I just moved up from play money to micro low limits. I started with .01/.02 which played very similar to play money. Easy game to beat. I moved to .05/.10 and found the players folded a little more often but still saw a lot of action. Still an easy game to beat. I am at .25/.50. It is a step better still but 5 or 6 see the flop, 3 see the river. You will see two players and 8 newbies/fish at this level.

I have played some $25 NL (.25/.50 blinds) and have had success but it is still too early to tell if I can play at this level. The players are trying to play decent poker but just lack the skill. This is the first level where you can out play someone and win money. In micro low limit, best hand wins.

Good luck
Ron

Yes, play money tables suck, at least with micro limits you're playing with people interested enough to pony up some cash from a credit card or something.

I tried the play money tables for a couple days before deciding I'd rather play .50/1 and lose $500 bucks leaning then deal with obviously pointless play...

Don't put too much stock in the play money games. Everyone bets and raises like they are at the final table of the WSOP...

NOT a realistic simulation of actual play at all as far as I'm concerned. Especially ring game play.

Hellmuth's book is worth reading as are many others. Everything by Caro or Sklansky should be read by anyone serious about taking up the game.
