| I heard things like "loose", "tight", "maniac", etc. What type of players are these and how do they typically play? How should one play against them? | ||

| "Loose" is someone who plays a lot of hands. You never know what a loose player is on. Be careful if the board is rags, because the loose player may have cards that fit. "Tight" is somebody who plays only the best hands, or is very selective about the hands he plays, and consequently plays very few hands. If he's in the pot, you will need the nuts to win. "Maniac" is really an extension of "Loose" with a few character traits added in: basically a maniac will play any two cards, and will usually bet/raise with reckless abandon. Play this guy very tight, let him have control, but when you have the absolute nuts abuse him like there is no tomorrow. You will have big fluctuations against a maniac; if you can't tolerate that, then get out of his game. -Moz "I opened for The Who at Woodstock. I came out in a Beatle wig and a ukulele. | 4 basic definitions *loose, tight, passive, aggressive* think of 2 dimensional graph something like *looks horrible but forum doesnt support spaces as place holders* xxxxxx|xxxxxx xxxxxx|xxxxxx ----------------- xxxxxx|xxxxxx xxxxxx|xxxxxx put loose at one end and tight at the opposite end, then put passive at one of the other ends and aggressive at the opposite end. everyone fits somewhere on the graph and the good players move around but in general are tight/aggressive loose, playing a hand in such a way that you are not favored to win (calling a draw without proper odds is loose, usually described with starting hands and playing hands that statistically are unlikely to win) tight, playing a hand in such a way that you are favored to win (almost always refering to being selective about your starting hands which statistically are better than your opponents) passive, someone who doesnt take control of a hand, doesnt bet for value, doesnt want to take chances aggressive, someone who wants to control the hand, bets and raises frequently when involved in a hand Maniacs usually fit somewhere in the loose/aggressive quadrant, play more hands than they should and/or bet more than they should based on their holdings most pros agree that somewhat tight *can be too tight* and somewhat aggressive *maniacs are overly aggressive* is the winning strategy Rule #1 of Poker Circumstances alter cases Rule #2 NEVER forget rule #1 | ||
