chips... most sets come with white, red, and blue. Is there a standard for what values they represent or is it basically up to the people playing at any given time?

In a casino, whites are $1 and reds are $5. I don't think they even use blue chips, but I might be wrong. Whenever you're playing, you can just set their worth to be whatever is convenient for the stakes you're playing. If you're playing a game with nickel bets, you probably don't want to make the chips $1 and $5, but maybe $0.05 and $0.25. Just make sure everyone is clear on how much each is worth ahead of time.

I've got a blue one from Costa Rica and its a 5000 chip. Unfortunately that translates to $12.50.

actually in Las vegas many casinos use blue for their $1 chips . Binions horseshoe club uses blue for $5 chips although they do have red edge spots.

for the most part it goes like this
white (or blue) $1
pink $2.50 Not used in vegas but popular elsewhere
red $5
bellagio has a yellow poker chip and it is $10
bellagio also has a orange poker chip and it is $20
green Universally (except hardrock which uses purple) $25
Black Just about every where $100
pink or purple (or some shade of either) $500

$2 chips which are popular in the California card rooms vary in color

go out first thing online and find a starting poker book, one that explains basic poker concepts, some of the games that the casinos spread, and introductory strategy. Maybe Lee Jones or something else.

Read that about 5 times. Play some practice hands with yourself at home, dealing out and playing all of the hands (as if you didn't know the other cards).

THEN play some more poker.

PS- I'm waiting for the post from the absolute beginner that reads "This is the first hand that I've ever played in a poker game, just earlier this evening. I had 7c2c3s..."

You can basically make them whatever you want, as long as everyone playing is clear on it.

In the casinos, they are usually like this:

$1 White
$2 Blue
$3 Yellow
$5 White
$10 Brown
$25 (I forget)
$100 Black

The colors begin to repeat at higher denominations, with greater amounts of embellishment. There's a purple in there too, but I forget what it's for.

NO, CAPT. THERE IS NO SET VALUE ON A CHEAP STORE-BOUGHT

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER, IS THAT IF

YOU BOUGHT A SET, SOMEONE ELSE CAN TOO.

CHIPS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO "DEFLATE" IN VALUE, BY

SOMEONE BRINGING IN THE SAME TYPE CHIP, AND

SECRETLY INTRODUCING IT INTO THE GAME, OR TAKING

SOME HOME, AND BRINGING THEM BACK, ANOTHER NIGHT,

WHEN THE VALUES HAVE CHANGED.

I'M NOT SAYING YOUR CROWD WOULD DO THIS, IT'S

JUST SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND.

IF YOU ARE PLAYING FOR MORE THAN DOLLAR OR TWO

DOLLAR MAXIMUM, I'D SUGGEST INVESTING IN A PERSONALIZED

SET OF CHIPS. IT'LL COST YOU A COUPLE HUNDOID, BUT

WILL BE AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR POKER GAME.

THOSE CHEAP CHIPS, ARE NOT FUN TO PLAY WITH, AND

HAVE MANY OTHER DISADVANTAGES.

IF YOU CAN'T SEE SPENDING THE MONEY ON YOUR OWN

CHIP SET, THEN I SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING:

MAKE SURE THAT THE VALUE OF THE CHIPS, IS THE SAME

FROM WEEK TO WEEK. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, WOULD

I HAVE A CHIP OF THE CHEAP TYPE, VALUED AT MORE

THAN ONE DOLLAR.

MAKE SURE THAT THE SET IS COMPLETE AT THE END OF THE

NIGHT, AND IF IT'S NOT, THEN BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND

OF CHIPS, FOR THE NEXT GAME, SO THAT THE

CHIP THEIF, WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY HIS STOLEN CHIPS,

THE NEXT GAME.
