| I'm an absolute beginner with a lot of questions. First up, betting really confuses me. I've read the rules on various web sites about "calling" but I'm not sure I completely understand. I'll give you an example, when my wife and I play each other, we just match what the other puts in. Let's say we start with ante of $1. On her first bet, she puts in $5. To call, I would put in $5 to match her bet and then raise if I wanted to... etc. From reading the rules, I think this is all wrong... can anyone help explain betting to me? kind of like a "poker for idiots" thing. | ||

| Calling is exactly that - putting as much money into the pot as the last person did. If your wife bets 5, you call by putting 5 more in. If your wife bets 5 and your other wife (giggles) raises 5 more to 10, then you call by putting in 10. Then your first wife has the option to call for 5, fold, or raise again. Does that clear things up? Lee | ||

| Gee, I didn't realize that gambling was allowed in Utah. I thought it was banned along with coffee, tea and soft drinks, etc. :-) | ||

| First, let me address your other question regarding chips. The red, white, and blue chips are whatever denomination you make them. This is usually specified before a session has begun for the day/evening. But, they shouldn't change from game to game. For example, if you assign the white chips to be worth 1 dollar, they wouldn't suddenly change to be worth 5 dollars the next round. Typically, White are worth the smallest amount, with red being slightly more, and blue being the highest. In a casino where you are playing blackjack or craps, typically white=$1, red=$5, green=$25, black=$100, purple=$500, and gold/yellow=$5,000. Now about calling/raising, Schuster (above) has a good explaination. Also, check out this page for further instructions on the game: http://www.pokersyte.com/ And for some basic strategies (Warning, the section on starting hands is loose, and they admit that). http://www.lowlimitholdem.com/ Welcome to the boards, and have fun! | ||
