| I just played my first O8B session and I would appreciate some comments on my play. Thanks in advance. Hand 1: Three callers to me. I call from sb with: Ad, Js, 7d, Kh. (Is this hand even worth a call for half a bet?) Flop: 4s, 5s, 6h I check and fold. Hand 2: Two callers to me. I call in the CO with As, Qc, 6s, 4c. (Too loose, right?). Button & blinds see flop for one bet. Flop: Ts, 3d, 2h Checked to me, I bet, everybody calls except one. Turn: Kd Checked to me, I check, button checks. River: Tc Big blind bets, folded to me, I fold. Hand 3: Two callers to me. I call in EMP with Ac, Ah, 9h, 3s. CO, button, & blinds call. Flop: 7c, 6s, 5c Checked to me, I check, checked around. Turn: Js Checked to the player to my right, who bets, I call (after much thought about raising), 1 more called behind me. River: 7h Checked to me, I bet, turn bettor calls. I ¾ with Aces up and a tie for 2nd nut low. Hand 4: All fold to button (!) who calls, I raise with As, Ks, Kc, Qd from sb. Bb & button call. Flop: 6h, 4d, 3c. I bet and take down the pot. Hand 5: I call UTG with Ah, Td, 8c, 2h. Four others see the flop. Flop: Qh, 4d, 3d BB bets, I call (should I jam here or try to sucker in worse low draws?) 2 others call Turn: 9h Checked to me, I bet, 2 callers. River: Qs Checked around BB wins whole pot with top two pair (9, 5, 4, 2). One other player was drawing for nut low. | ||

| Lunchmeat I looked at your play in all the hands. I find it almost impossible to believe this is your first crack at O8.....you played fine for a first try!!!! Your play in hands 1,2,4 looks ok to me. Hand #3 has been played too passively both preflop ( A-A-3-9 with a suited ace is worth a raise here!) and on the turn. Given the flop being checked around, it is unlikely the bettor has you beat in both spots so you need to put pressure on the players who either have the same low as you or 2 pair. You bet the river like you should have. In hand #5 a call is in order on the flop as you did. Don't even think of raising here!!!!! You want the bad low draws in so leave the door open. You have no hand for high on the flop so raising is VERY poor here. Imagine the problem you will face if the flop bettor has A,2 and any made high hand or draw!! Good play not raising here. Horrible play not firing on the river since you took over the lead on the turn!!!! You got a beautiful card on the river to run a bluff and you were getting 7 or 8 to 1 on the river bet. Since you took action with a good draw on the turn you should have followed through. The hand that scooped this pot must have made you sick!!!! Overall good stuff lunchmeat!!! Just my thoughts. | Thanks for the kind words. It was indeed my first O8 session, but I play hold 'em professionally and have been studying Ray Zee's book, so I'm not totally clueless. Anyway... I was curious as to what O8 hands are good for a preflop raise (Zee's book isn't specific at all on this). On the one hand, I don't want to play too passively pre-flop (a sin in hold 'em), but on the other hand nearly every starting hand in O8 is essentially a drawing hand, so it also seems like I want to get in cheaply with good odds on my draws. So what other types of hands are good for a raise other than the AA93 you mentioned (excluding raises to buy the button or steal the blinds). Thanks in advance. | ||

I would consider betting the turn, even though you just have a draw. You have several opponents, and either a 5 or offsuit jack may scoop it for you. Also, you have the other low cards to fall back on, plus a 6 for backup in case an ace or 4 comes (giving you the second nuts, which might still win the low). I would check without the high straight draw, but I think having this makes betting your draw correct. Don't try to bluff the river, though, as someone will call you (suspecting you were betting a low draw that missed). > Hand 3: Two callers to me. I call in EMP with Ac, Ah, 9h, 3s. CO, button, & > blinds call. > Flop: 7c, 6s, 5c > Checked to me, I check, checked around. > Turn: Js > Checked to the player to my right, who bets, I call (after much thought about > raising), 1 more called behind me. > River: 7h > Checked to me, I bet, turn bettor calls. > I ¾ with Aces up and a tie for 2nd nut low. > I would probably play this hand more aggressively at every point. In particular, I would raise on the turn. The reason for this is that it is unlikely any of your opponents checked the nut low or a straight, but may well have checked 2 pair or the second nut low (the button would have bet the flop with A2 or a straight, and so would the blinds on the turn after everyone checked the flop). So, a raise may get it down to you and the bettor, who may have you beat one way but doubtfully both. Just calling may allow 2 pair in to beat your high hand. > Hand 4: All fold to button (!) who calls, I raise with As, Ks, Kc, Qd from sb. > Bb & button call. > Flop: 6h, 4d, 3c. > I bet and take down the pot. > Nice bet on the flop! Although there aren't too many times when I like to raise with high only hands, this is a good opportunity to take charge in the pot. > Hand 5: I call UTG with Ah, Td, 8c, 2h. Four others see the flop. > Flop: Qh, 4d, 3d > BB bets, I call (should I jam here or try to sucker in worse low draws?) 2 Calling is good, for the reason you mentioned. I would only consider jamming this one with A25 in my hand, but calling is still preferable if raising will make players fold - keep 'em in! > others call > Turn: 9h > Checked to me, I bet, 2 callers. Betting is ok here, as you have plenty of ways to win the high (flush draw plus a jack for a straight). I would check with only a low draw, though, as I'm sure you would have. > River: Qs > Checked around > BB wins whole pot with top two pair (9, 5, 4, 2). One other player was drawing > for nut low. > This may be a time to consider bluffing (although you'd probably get called). By just calling the flop, and betting the turn when a high card came, it may look like you're going high. Also, it doesn't seem like the queen hit anyone. You can't win this one by checking, and with everyone appearing to be fairly weak a bluff just might work (you are getting about 13:1 odds on this attempt from what I can tell, and I would think the chances of success are quite a bit better than that). Overall, I liked the way you played these hands. You must've done some homework before diving in. Mark | ||

| I just played my first real money O8 session also. A strange game. This hand left me shaking my head: I was dealt A346 (with a suited ace) from MP. 2 callers to me and I call, three callers after. Flop is 24K, and I know this is shaping up to be a great hand. Turn is a 5, giving me the absolute nut low AND nut high str8. I play very aggressively and it's capped with 4 players. River is a 7 and again it's capped with 4 players. And in the end...I lost money (?!). The low was split three ways and the high went to an 8 high str8. I guess that's what makes O8 interesting...turn the nut low AND high and end up a modest loser. It'll take some getting used to. | ||

| SO MANY QUESTIONS, SO LITTLE TIME. FIRST OF ALL, A REQUEST: ADAM THE EXPERT DOES NOT "DO" ABBREVIATIONS, SO ANY FUTURE QUESTIONS, SHOULD NOT CONTAIN ANY. LIKE I'M SUPPOSE TO INSTANTLY KNOW WHAT "CO" MEANS?! (ADAM THE EXPERT, HATES THIS TERM) WHO STARTED IT, ANYWAY? OK, FIRST QUESTION, YES, THE HAND IS PLAYABLE, IS SMALL LIMIT GAMES, WITH MANY CALLERS. AN ACE HIGH FLUSH, IS THE ONLY HAVE, OTHER THAN QUADS OR HIGHER, THAT CANNOT BE TIED. THIS GIVES IT REASONABLE ENOUGH POWER, TO MERIT PLAYING, ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU ALSO HAVE THE CARDS THAT CAN MAKE A "WRAP" STRAIGHT DRAW. AND, OCCASIONNALY THE A 7, WILL ACTUALLY PLAY FOR LOW, IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU WERE GOING FOR THE NUT FLUSH, MAKE IT, AND NO ONE HAPPENS TO HAVE A BETTER LOW. OR, YOU MISS, MAKE A LOW, AND IT'S CHECKED AROUND, AND YOU "ACCIDENTLY" WIN LOW. BUT, YOU MUST KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MUST HIT , AND EQUALLY IMPORTANT, WHAT YOU MUST "nOT" HIT. DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT, GO FOR A FLUSH, WHEN THE LOW IS ALREADY PRESENT, AT LEAST NOT IN THIS SITUATION, WHERE YOU ONLY HAVE ONE BET IN. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE LOW IS A WHEEL, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO FACE MANY BETS, TO DRAW TO YOUR FLUSH. SORRY, BUT I CAN'T ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS. ADAM THE EXPERT, IS BY FAR, THE NUMBER ONE AUTHORITY IN THE WORLD, IN THE SUBJECT OF OMAHA, AND IF ENOUGH INTEREST IS GENERATED, WILL COMPLETE HIS BOOK, WHICH WILL CONTAIN A COMPLETE EXPLAINATION, OF WINNING OMAHA. | ||
