3/6 versus 5/10 Limit Hold 'Em, DGR, 19. Nov 2003 08:00

Well, this past weekend was another great learning experience for my short poker life.

Friday night, while playing 3/6 Limit Hold 'Em, I more-than doubled my money and left the table with $450 dollars. I played a twelve hour session and felt good. This was a great table! No fish and a very challenging group of opponents.

After some sleep and lots of energy food, I returned to the 3/6 tables and enetered a game that seemed to be fairly challenging. What I found out is that the table was full of "chasers" with money to burn. This had a reverese effect on me and I soon found myself loosing to terrible hands, by players that would constantly run for the river - AND WIN!

After some great frustration, I moved to the 5/10 table. This was my first time playing 5/10 Limit Hold 'Em and i found the players to much tighter and more knowledgable. No one was what I would consider a "chaser" and in four hands I made $200. This was a great table for me.

My question: Do you folks find that playing at a 3/6 table is a bit of a bad move, seeing that there are often many folks that will stay in hands with bad cards, and win? Do you think 5/10 is a better place to play - not too much money, but a nice amount and the players are better...?

Does anyone think 3/6 might be a waste of my time? I play in Atlantic City, and anyone who plays there should have an idea of what I am talking about.

Thanks Again!

Maybe you should just start playing bad cards, since they win. Short term results are exactly that - short term results. Playing against worse players generally means more money in the long run. Whatever game you decide to play is up to you, but I wouldn't base my decision on 3 sessions.

I'm an online player and I know that limits are a lot different online than in a casino. For instance, the 1/2 game online is like 3/6 in a casino (IMO) and the 2/4 is like the 5/10. This is because people going in to casinos don't want to play those high limits, don't have the bankrolls for higher limits, but the smaller games aren't available...

Anyways...I bring up this point because what I feel the same way you do when I play 1/2 online. I think it is more to your advantage is more up to the limit you feel most comfortable with, and have the bankroll to play. However, I feel it is a terrible...TERRIBLE...mistake to move up in limits after a losing session. It's too easy to get into "I want it all back" mode. Just a few thoughts.

DGR, 3-6 CAN BE EXPENSIVE BECAUSE OF THE COST OF THE RAKE. MAYBE THESE FISH IN 3-6 ARE BETTER THAN YOU THINK. WHAT IS YOUR LONG TERM EXPECTATION----3 MONTHS? LJH

DGR,

Where I play 5/10 plays the same as your 3/6 game. lots of chasers. I welcome them. sure they'll catch their runner runner flush once out of every 8 or so times but they pay you off the other 7. Sure the bad beats stick out, but watch next time you play a long session and see who's busting out. Often you'll see its the same player who sucked out a flush with 92s against your set of 10's leaving with an empty rack.

The swings are there but in the long run the math works out and you'll be a winner. another important part is to never and I mean never play above your bankroll. So if 5/10 is above it stay away until your roll is big enough.
