Play Money v. Real Money, CRCarson, 18. Nov 2003 15:18

I have been playing online at PartyPoker.com for the past few weeks, and doing rather well in Texas Hold'Em 5/10 games. I'm reading books by Warren, Braids and Carson, and learning to play very conservatively (tight).

My frustration comes when playing online...I play AA or AK only to lose to players who fill a flush or a straight at the river. The motto seems to be, "Never fold, bet the max, play all the way to the river." These guys are beating me with hands that Phil Ivey or Phil Helmuth would have folded before the flop. It seems that all the odds and rules of REAL poker are meaningless in these play money games.

Any advice on how to play against (and beat) these river rats?

Yes....
Dont play them. Its a crap shoot.
The play really is meaningless.
Deposit some money somewhere and play for real. It doesnt have to be a lot, but the funny money games are terrible. It was so refreshing playing games (real) that matter to the players.

Drop 50 bucks somewhere and play the micro limit games. Consider it spending money, as you might ver well lose it. UB has games as low as 0.01/0.02 and on up. You can play for a long time and people will be much less inclined to go absolutely crazy when there's at least something involved. There will still be a lot of chasers, but it won't be as bad. Play money isn't even close to the real thing.

Play money Games are never a true indicator of how a poker game plays out.

My advice, take the step and find a site that has really low limit money games (Like 5c/10c) and go from there. Even at these very low limits peoples attitudes will change and you will see a lot more folding at the table

I recently started playing low limit (.25/.50) after racking up 1k play chips to over 2 million in about 2 months by reading some books and playing fairly smart/selective about starting hands, folding if I don't hit the flop.
Even at this limit I find the real games much tougher. You have way less people seeing flops and the pots are much much smaller. I've been playing for about a week and am up a little bit but I've learned alot about the importance of position and not chasing mediocre hands. On the other hand if you do have a strong hand the chances of loseing to some numbskull calling 4 bets pre-flop with 72 offsuit and catching a 7 on the river to make a winning hand. I concur with the suggestion to start out with very low-limit games to see how you do and minimize your losses while learning.

I agree with them. Play for real money. I had aces cracked to someone who had no business playing the hands. I asked them why and they said its play money, it doesn't matter. There are times when you will find some serious players but it doesn't happen often. I used the play money tables as a learning tool for the kind of weird stuff that can happen in a given hand. At first, all the average person knows is hold'em but after a while they can add stud, omaha, and triple draw to their resume. Then, use that knowledge for the real money games, online or casino. You'll still get people who treat it like play money, but since you don't, you'll probably catch them provided they don't get too lucky.
