Did I marry my big pair?, Schuster, 15. Nov 2003 17:58 | ||

| Generally I think I have a good feeling of when to release my big pair and when to play it the whole way, but this hand I was just lost. It's a 3/6 online game and I've been there for about 2 orbits. The table was just about the biggest no fold'em hold'em game I've seen in ages. People would chase and chase and chase, often drawing obviously near dead. We're talking 2 undercards on the turn and they'd see the river. Anyway, there's 3 limpers to me and I raise with AA 2 off the button. The cutoff reraises and the button caps it. The BB and all the limpers all, and I call. The flop is JJ7 with a 2 flush. Not the flop I wanted to see, but there's 24 small bets in the pot. It's checked to me and I bet (mistake?). The cutoff calls and the button raises. At this point, I figure he's on a big pair, KK QQ or maybe even the other 2 aces. Everyone calls (ugh!) to me and I call. Even if someone has a jack, I'm getting odds to try to spike an ace. The turn is a blank and it's checked to me. I check, figuring if I'm ahead somehow, then there is nothing I can do to protect my hand by betting and not too many outs against me other than the flush draw, and if I'm behind, I'd rather pay the minimum. The button bets again, 1 caller to me and I call. The cutoff calls also. The river is another blank. It's checked to the button who bets again, and it's folded to me. I figure I can't let it go now and call, since the pot is absolutely enormous. The button has 77 for a flopped full house and I'm left wondering. So did I take it too far, or should I have played it like I did since the pot was so big, and my hand could very well have been good? Lee | ||

| Hi Lee If the pot was smaller, i would have check folded the turn. I don't see how betting is worth while on this flop, against so many opponents who called 4 bets preflop, and now are into a huge pot. I don't think anyone will fold to a single bet, and most likely you are way behind. However, with the pot so big, i would easily check and call for a bet on the turn. if the flop got checked around, i may call or even bet/raise the turn, depending on the players. its a tough place to be, you have to figure to be beaten, but your getting correct pot odds to draw. | Hey Lee, Grant it, it's not the best flop, however, with that many opponents in the hand, if someone doesn't hold a Jack, you're in pretty good shape, (or better shape) than if the flop came up with three random cards; because it would be easier for someone to make two pair and to draw out on you. With the paired flop out there, if noone has a Jack but they spike a pair on the turn....then you're still way ahead here. (Okay, in this hand your opponent flopped seven's full), but like I said, with all those players in there playing really loose just trying to hit a pair, and then perhaps two pair....with the paired flop, it increases your chances of your hand to be good and to hold up more. It's tough to lay that one down imo, because the flop raisor could have raised you with K-K or Q-Q as well, and due to the size of the pot, (*24 small bets preflop*), I would have made the call as well, and when the turn and river seem to bring two blanks, and no straight or flush is present here....I also would have called especially when it's one bet on the turn to see the river, and only one more bet to call him at the river. You can't even think about folding the river now because everyone folded to his bet leaving only you to make the call. I'm sure it's much harder putting your opponents on hands and even reading them half-way correctly when they play that ultra-loose and never fold! If there was a raising war going on, or you *really* knew your opponent here, then perhaps a fold would be more in order, but with only one opponent acting aggresively post-flop, I would be more inclined to pay it off if I was able to pay the minimum. | Lee, You wanna talk No Fold em Hold em? Well, I have just spent the last 3-4 months at the penny tables learning this game and THAT is no fold em. Seriously, youre table sounds just like a penny table. With nothing over a J, even paired, on the board, you will see at least half of them at the river. Now I know 3/6 isnt like penny but you played it exactly like I would have at .01 Well, I know Im not in your league (yet),but if you wanna play no fold em your welcome to join me anytime. And if anyone makes fun of me, well come on down and we will settle it over pennies. John | ||

| Given the odds the pot was laying you it sounds like you played it pretty well. However if you were positive that you were beat you might have wanted to lay it down. | ||

| Schuster I like the way you played on every street. You may feel you are beat but a fold is out of the question given the aggressors preflop play and the size or this pot. Well played.....bad result....oh well. Good luck!!!! GRANT PITTMAN | ||
