Possible to save a bet?, Poker God, 14. Nov 2003 04:10 | ||

| 3-6 HE online, first hand of session. Im in the BB with A8o with 1 limper 2 UTG and the SB who completed. Flop A55 with 1 club, SB checks, I bet out, limper calls, SB folds. Turn 9 of clubs for 2 clubs. I bet again and he calls. River 8 of clubs giving me a bigger 2 pair if he has an ace. I bet out again he raises and I immediately call. He flips up Q6 of clubs for the flush. Ok after I see the result Im very upset but not for the obvious reason. I think that its absolutely imperative to lay the hand down for the raise on the river. What hands could he possibly bet at me on the river with or without me knowing how he plays, as I did not in this situation. There obviously is no way I can put him Q6 but I figure a bet would come from a slow play of trip 5s or a full boat, the flush on the river, the same A8 as me or a far possibility of just a big ace. I would like to hear others opinions on this if its as clear cut a decision to fold as I think it is. | ||

| You can't fold the river here, but I would have check called when the club hit. He could be playing AK, AQ, AJ, or AT that way and was trying to bluff you out when the scare card hit. Since he has two pair as well, the 8 might have won you the hand. The pot is big, therefore a check/call is in order here. | ||

| Why did you bet the river- would you expect even a call from someone who doesn't have you beaten? See shorn's reply, but better to get bet into and lose 1 BB than to bet 1BB with the chance of winning none OR losing 2BB OR getting knocked out on a bluff bet by the opponent | ||

| Thinking about it I see both of your points that is needed to just check call the river. I guess in my situation as I did bet the river, I have to lay it down to a raise. | ||

| "I guess in my situation as I did bet the river, I have to lay it down to a raise." ONLY if there is NO chance of him putting a move on you! It would be disasterous to drop a pot here with the winning hand over 1 bet. Agreed, he probably has the flush, but it better be really close to a 100% chance at that point. That why the check-call is better- you lost a max of one bet, can't lose the entire pot to a bluff AND you probably won't get an extra bet from him anyway, by betting first, unless he's loose or you're known to bluff. | ||

| I'd bet the river in this spot, there's a decent chance the other guy has an ace. Need to milk as much out of every hand as you can. As far as the river play... Sometimes I'll pay it off when I'm almost sure I'm beat just so someone doesn't go putting a play on me everytime a scare card falls on the river. If I don't think my opponent is capable of doing that, and I'm sure I'm beat, then I'll let it go. Lee | ||

| Your opponent was stupid to chase with only a back-door flush draw and got lucky. But what did you think he had? When you bet the flop and the turn and he kept calling? Had I been you, I would have suspected a set of 5's and would have slowed down. Kennycatkiller | ||
