How would you play this?, Eaglesfan1, 13. Nov 2003 23:03

I had just doubled up the prior hand with AA. Do you go all in in this situation? The blinds were 75/150 I only had 860. Then again the top 3 payed out and 4 were left. I was playing tight and all the players knew so I figured he was trying to bluff me off... How would you play this?

I would have folded your hand preflop. One more player gets knocked out and you make the money. However, it's not the worst call considering, but, once he bets the flop with that board, I would have folded for sure - and knowing that he had the 2nd worst chip stack would lead me to believe even more that he held a strong hand, so now that I think about it, once he raises your initial call preflop, is when you need to give him a little bit of credit and make the laydown right there. The flop play: If he has a pair higer than your nine, you can't catch up, and if he holds a higher Ace than you, his kicker will come in to play unless you catch a running nine or an Ace for a split pot. (however in this case, you were drawing dead to his pocket Aces).

I would have laid that hand down before the flop ever came and I definitely would have dropped it after he bet on the flop. You had enough for a few more rounds of blinds and only needed one more person to go out to make the money.

At this point I think you either go all-in or fold on the preflop. For me it would have been a toss up (leaning towards fold) but I wouldn't have called. I wouldn't want to have to make a decision on an ugly flop between going all-in or playing with a crippled stack.

With 4 players left and only 3 get paid, you have to be in survival mode. Since you were on the button, you had a couple more chances for a better hand, so I think I would have folded to the pre-flop raise. Sure, any ace is good 4-handed, but ... But, since you called (did you consider re-raising?), you are in the soup. Now, when the 3 Jacks came tripping out on the flop, and your opponent (who had raised pre-flop) bet again, you simply have to fold.
