Playing overcards in NL, ann, 13. Nov 2003 20:43

I'm playing a $5 NLHE SnG. It's the second hand of the game, there are still 10 players and everybody's pretty close in stack size. The blinds are 10/15.

I'm in the big blind with AQ of clubs. There are 5 limpers including the SB. I raise it to 60. The next guy folds, third guy calls, the rest fold to the small blind who also calls. So we're three handed seeing the flop which comes up 3s Ts 6s. The good news is that it is probably unlikely that there's a made flush yet and as long as nobody has a pocket pair, I'm probably in the lead. I decide to bet 60. The second guy folds and the small blind calls. The turn comes 5s. Now if the SB has only one spade I'm toast. I've decided that if the SB bets that I'm folding. The SB checks and I do too. The river comes with a 6d and we check it down. I win when the small blind shows 97 of hearts.

Was the flop bet of 60 too small or should it be enough to scare most people off?

Thanks

The SB was crazy to call the bet. If I had AT no match to the flop suit I'd be reluctant to call. You made a very gutsy bet imo. I certainly wouldn't have risked a bigger bet.

I knew it was a risky play, but I figured it was real early in the tournament I could take a chance with a small bet and still recover if I was wrong. Having said that I don't think I'd do it again, because of a trend that I've been noticing playing these sit n gos. I've only played about ten $5 sit n gos so I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this too. Until you get down to about 5 or 6 people the hands play a lot like low-limit "no fold-em" hold-em. This hand is a perfect example where somebody who has no business calling a bet does. I'm also curious to see if this trend is true at the more expensive sit n gos.

You didn't say where you were playing at, if Party or PokerStars, I see this all the time...

You're giving better than 4.5 to 1 odds to draw if someone has a single spade. Either make a real bet (pot sized or a little less) on the flop or don't, but don't give someone odds to draw when you don't even have a hand. A little bet like that looks like you either flopped a flush, or have nothing at all. More often than not, it's nothing at all.
